JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Southeast Missouri (14-14, 9-6) matched a season-low 59 points in a 69-59 loss to Jacksonville State (13-17, 7-8) Thursday night at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Southeast fell to its third-straight loss and fifth in seven games.
The Redhawks shot under 40 percent from the field for the third-straight game, this time making just 19-of-56 shots (.339).
Southeast's troubles began in a first half which saw the Redhawks score only 17 points.
The Redhawks took a 17-15 lead on
Tyler Stone's layup with 8:28 left to play, but did not score for the rest of the half after that.
Southeast went 0-of-9 from the field, and as a result, JSU used a 12-0 run to pull ahead, 27-17, at the intermission. Grant White scored six of the Gamecocks points and buried a three-pointer during that stretch.
The Redhawks, who opened the game by shooting 26.9 percent (7-of-26) from the floor, had under 20 points in the first half for the first time since scoring only 10 at Morehead State on Jan. 14, 2010.
Southeast went scoreless for nearly 11 minutes (10:50) before finally breaking its spell when Stone hit a jumper to slice JSU's lead to 30-21 with 17:38 remaining in the second half.
The Redhawks showed signs of life when they put together a 10-1 jaunt to pull to within six points late in the second half.
After Rinaldo Mafra's free throw gave JSU a 53-38 lead with 6:48 left to play,
Michael Porter converted a three-point play and
Marland Smith knocked down a trey to key the surge. Smith's trifecta narrowed the Gamecocks lead to 54-48 at the 4:17 mark.
That, however, was as close as Southeast would get.
Stone scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Redhawks. He shot 5-of-14 from the field and made a perfect 6-of-6 free throws. Stone also had a team-high eight rebounds.
Porter had a big game off the bench, adding 13 points, all of which came in the second half. He hit 5-of-9 field goals, 3-of-4 free throws, grabbed four rebounds and had a steal in 23 minutes.
Four of JSU's five starters scored double figures, led by Brian Williams' 14 points. Ronnie Boggs followed with 13, White added 10 and Nick Cook chipped in a double-double 10 points and 12 rebounds.
JSU also shot under 40 percent (.391) from the field, but scored 31 of its points at the free throw line. The Gamecocks shot 31-of-46 at the charity stripe.
In addition, the Gamecocks clinched their spot in next week's Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
Southeast closes out its regular-season at Austin Peay Saturday.
