Southeast Goes After OVC Tournament Seed This Week
Southeast is one of five teams which have punched their ticket to the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, scheduled for Feb. 29-Mar. 3 at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium. Regular-Season Champion Murray State and Tennessee State have locked up the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds. Southeast, Tennessee Tech and Morehead State have also secured their spots. Seeding for the rest of the tournament will be determined after this week's games. The Redhawks can clinch the No. 3 seed with two wins this week. The only scenario where Southeast wouldn't get either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed is if it loses its last two games and both Tennessee Tech and Morehead State win out.
Winning Season on the Brink
One more win will guarantee Southeast its first winning season since 2004-05. The Redhawks are 14-13 overall and 9-5 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Southeast went 15-14 and 9-7 in the OVC under-then head coach Gary Garner during its last winning campaign in 2004-05.
On Target
Another Ohio Valley Conference victory will give the Redhawks 10 league wins in a season for only the fourth time in school history and first since Southeast tied for first in the conference with a 14-4 record in 1999-00. That year also marked the Redhawks lone NCAA Tournament appearance. Southeast has gone 11-consecutive seasons with no more than nine OVC wins.
Series History
Jacksonville State holds an 11-5 advantage in its all-time series against Southeast. The Redhawks have won three of the last five meetings with the Gamecocks. Southeast beat JSU, 74-56, in Cape Girardeau on Jan. 2. The Redhawks, who defeated JSU, 76-67, at Pete Mathews Coliseum a year ago, have never beaten the Gamecocks on the road in back-to-back seasons.
