Redhawks Resume Play in Louisiana
Southeast Missouri (5-4) heads to Southeastern Louisiana (1-4) Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m., CT, at the University Center.
Series History
Southeast is a perfect 3-0 against Southland Conference member Southeastern Louisiana. The Redhawks played all of those matchups in Cape Girardeau. Southeast beat the Lions, 63-61, on Dec. 3, 2011. Prior to that, the Redhawks won, 84-49, in 1953-54 and, 63-52, in 1954-55.
First Month in the Books
The Redhawks completed their first month of the season with a 5-4 record. It marked the first time Southeast compiled a winning record in November under head coach
Dickey Nutt. The Redhawks went 3-4 in 2011-12, 2-5 in 2009-10 and 0-6 in 2010-11 during November games prior to this year.
Against the Southland Conference
Southeast has faced five schools from the Southland Conference during their basketball history. The Redhawks are 11-6 all-time against Southland foes, holding a 5-4 record vs. Central Arkansas, a 0-1 record vs. Nicholls State, a 3-0 mark vs. Southeastern Louisiana, a 2-0 record aganst Texas-Arlington and a 1-1 record vs. McNeese State. Saturday marks the second of three games Southeast will play against Southland Conference opponents this season. The Redhawks played McNeese State (Nov. 15) and will host Central Arkansas (Dec. 8) a week from Saturday.
Redhawks Go for Third-Straight Win
The Redhawks will look to match their season-long three-game winning streak when they square off against the Lions. Southeast beat Hannibal-LaGrange (96-55, on Nov. 26) at home and New Orleans (83-67, on Nov. 29) on the road. The Redhawks won three-straight games one other time this season (Nov. 12, Nov. 15, Nov. 18).
Keep On Playing
Southeast has played nine games this season, the most of any team in the Ohio Valley Conference. Eastern Illinois (3-5) follows with eight games, while Jacksonville State (5-2), Morehead State (4-3), Tennessee State (2-5) and UT Martin (2-5) each played seven contests.
Nice Defense
Southeast leads the Ohio Valley Conference and ranks ninth out of 345 NCAA Division I teams in the nation in field goal percentage defense. Opponents are shooting just 34.8 percent (197-of-566) against the Redhawks this year. Southeast has held all nine of its foes under 40 percent shooting. The Redhawks are also third in the OVC defending the three, limiting opponents to just 25.3 percent (48-of-190) from behind the arc.
Nutt Breaks Through
Guard
Lucas Nutt broke through with a season-high 16 points as one of three players in double figures during Southeast's latest 83-67 win over New Orleans (Nov. 29). Nutt made 6-of-8 from the field and 2-of-2 at the free throw line, while dishing out a game-high six assists. He scored 10 of his points in the first half. Prior to Thursday, Nutt went 13-straight games without scoring double figures. In addition, Nutt's six field goals matched his through the Redhawks first eight games this season.
Stone Among National Leaders in Double-Doubles
Tyler Stone ranks eighth in the nation in double-doubles. Stone has registered a double-double in four of his last six starts. He has 10 double-doubles in his career. Stone is third in the Ohio Valley Conference with 35 minutes per game this season.
Stone Surpasses 600 Career Points
Tyler Stone's game-high 23 points against New Orleans (Dec. 1) put him over 600 in his two-year career at Southeast. Stone, who has scored double figures in eight-straight games, earned his second 20-point effort this season and seventh of his career. He shot 10-of-17 from the field and 3-of-4 at the free throw line, while pulling down 14 rebounds and gathering three blocks. Stone leads the Redahwks and ranks ninth in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring with 16.1 points per game. He is also averaging a team-high 9.3 rebounds and has had 10 or more boards in four of his last six starts.
Elite Company
Senior guard
Marland Smith became only the third player in Southeast history to make 200 career three-pointers. Smith's 200th career trey gave the Redhawks a 52-40 lead with 15:13 left at New Orleans (Nov. 29). He is currently 200-of-585 for a .342 clip from behind the arc. He ranks second on the team with 12 threes this season. Derek Winans (219, 2001-05) and Curtis Shelton (215, 1990-94) are Southeast's other players with over 200 all-time career three-point field goals made list.
Shooting Well Equals Wins
All of Southeast's wins have been by double-digits and came when the Redhawks shot over 50 percent from the field this season. Southeast made 32-of-60 field goals for a .533 mark at New Orleans (Nov. 29). The Redhawks shot a season-best .643 (36-of-56) three days ealier vs. Hannibal-LaGrange (Nov. 26).
