Southeast Missouri Game Notes
Quick Hits
Redhawks Look to Continue Winning Ways
Southeast carries a season-long four-game winning streak to Eastern Kentucky this weekend. The Redhawks are on a four-game winning streak for the first time since 2004-05. That year, Southeast won six in a row from Jan. 27-Feb. 12. Interestingly enough, EKU put a halt to that streak when it beat Southeast, 83-72, in Richmond on Feb. 17.
Last Two Standing
The Redhawks are one of only two teams left without a loss in Ohio Valley Conference play. Southeast and No. 18 Murray State are currently tied for first in the league standings with 3-0 records. The Racers will also be on the road Saturday when they head to OVC preseason-favorite Austin Peay.
Winning Record
Southeast, which is 8-7 overall this season, has a winning record for the first time in three years under head coach
Dickey Nutt. That mark is the Redhawks best through their first 15 games of a season since 2003-04 (9-6).
Brister Nets Game-Winner
Marcus Brister scored the game-winning basket on a layup with 12 seconds left to help Southeast grind out a 73-71 victory at UT Martin Thursday. UTM immediately called a 30-second timeout after Brister's bucket and inbounded the ball to Mike Liabo at halfcourt. Liabo then launched a three-pointer to the right of the circle that just missed as the buzzer sounded, allowing the Redhawks to escape. Southeast ended a four-game losing streak in Martin, Tenn.
Comeback Kids
The Redhawks overcame a 12-point deficit en route to securing its third-straight Ohio Valley Conference victory at UT Martin (Jan. 5). It marked the second time this season where Southeast rallied from a double-digit deficit to pull off a victory. The Redhawks also trailed by 13 early in the first half against Miami (Ohio) before earning a 64-57 win on Nov. 26 in Cape Girardeau.
Let's Get Another
With another road victory, Southeast will be on a three-game winning streak away from home for the first time since 2004-05. That year, the Redhawks won at UT Martin (75-68) on Feb. 3, Murray State (61-58) on Feb. 5 and Eastern Illinois (88-79) on Feb. 8. Southeast won each of its last two road matchups by no more than two points in the final seconds, defeating Sacramento State, 77-76, on Dec. 22 and UT Martin, 73-71, on Jan. 5.
Big "D"
Defensively, Southeast made some huge stops which led to its dramatic come-from-behind win at UT Martin (Jan. 5).
Leon Powell recorded two blocks and
Marland Smith had a steal on three-straight Skyhawk possessions when the Redhawks were making their 14-2 run to take their first lead in the second half. Powell also scored the go-ahead basket on a jumper to give Southeast a 53-51 edge at the 13:21 mark. The Redhawks never led by more than two points in that game.
Keeping Up With Jones
Waylon Jones gave Southeast a big boost off the bench when forwards
Tyler Stone (4),
Leon Powell (5) and
Michael Porter (5) were in foul trouble at UT Martin (Jan. 5). Jones made a free throw to tie the game at 71-71 with 1:16 left before
Marcus Brister hit his game-winning shot. He also had a big offensive rebound and added one block.
Redhawks Hit Season-High in Field Goal Percentage
The Redhawks shot a season-high 59.2 percent (29-of-49) from the field at UT Martin (Jan. 5). Southeast missed only six field goals en route to a scorching 71.4 percent clip (15-of-21) in the second half. It marked the first time the Redhawks shot over 59 percent in a game since posting a .592 mark (29-of-49) vs. Central Methodist on Dec. 16, 2005. In addition, it was Southeast's highest field goal percentage on the road since the Redhawks shot 53.5 percent (23-of-43) at Murray State during the 2008-09 campaign.
Series History
Eastern Kentucky owns a 22-17 lead in its all-time series against Southeast. The Redhawks have lost four-straight games in Richmond and have not beaten the Colonels on their homecourt since 2006-07 (88-74). Southeast ended a seven-game losing skid in the series when it upended EKU, 65-49, in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament a year ago.
