Southeast Missouri Game Notes

Quick Hits

TV Time
Southeast Missouri (12-9, 7-2) and #9/10 Murray State (21-0, 9-0) take center stage for a nationally-televised ESPNU matchup Thursday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., CT, at the CFSB Center. Southeast last played a nationally-televised game on ESPNU back in 2009-10. That year, the Redhawks lost at Eastern Illinois, 88-68, on Jan. 9.

Against Nationally-Ranked Opponents
Thursday's showdown will mark Southeast's ninth against a ranked opponent since the Redhawks joined the NCAA Division I ranks. Southeast is 0-8 all-time in such games. Murray State is the fifth Top-10 opponent the Redhawks will face and first since playing at then-No. 6 Illinois on Dec. 28, 2005.

Worth Noting
Southeast was the last to hand Murray State a regular-season Ohio Valley Conference loss when it beat the Racers, 64-57, in Cape Girardeau on Feb. 16, 2011. The Redhawks put a halt to Murray State's eight-game winning streak at the time. With that win, Southeast secured its first OVC Tournament berth since 2006-07. The Racers have reeled off 11-consecutive regular-season conference games since then.

On a Roll
Southeast won eight of its last 10 games and heads to league-leading Murray State with momentum after earning a 74-53 win at Eastern Illinois on Jan. 30. The Redhawks improved to 7-2 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Southeast is a perfect 5-0 against OVC foes at home this year. The Redhawks only league losses have come at Eastern Kentucky (63-59, Jan. 7) and Tennessee Tech (77-62, Jan. 21). Southeast closed out the month with a 6-2 record, its best in January under head coach Dickey Nutt.

Smith Approaching 1,000 Career Points
Junior guard Marland Smith needs just 31 more points to reach 1,000 in his Southeast career. Smith, who ranks as the Redhawks second-leading scorer with 12.4 points per game this season, has a total of 969 since joining the program in 2009-10. Derek Winans was the last Redhawk to score over 1,000 points in a career when he had 1,505 from 2001-05.

Series History
Southeast trails its all-time series against Murray State, 44-18. The Redhawks are looking to end a four-game losing streak in Murray. Southeast last won there on Jan. 8, 2007 (96-85). The Redhawks dropped two of their last three games at Murray State by 25 or more points. Southeast snapped a streak of eight-straight losses in the series with its win in Cape Girardeau a year ago.

Board Certified
The Redhawks outrebounded their opponents by a combined 92-51 (+41) over the last two games. Southeast outmuscled Austin Peay, 50-26, on the boards for a season-best +24 rebounding margin on Jan. 26. Four days later, the Redhawks held a 42-25 (+17) advantage on the glass at Eastern Illinois.
