Redhawks Return Home to Face SIUE
Southeast, which has won four of its last five games, returns to Cape Girardeau for a two-game homestand, beginning Thursday when it hosts SIU Edwardsville (5-8, 3-1). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., CT, at the Show Me Center.
Home Sweet Home
The Redhawks are currently 6-2 at the Show Me Center this season. Southeast already has more home victories than it did in each of its first two years under head coach
Dickey Nutt. The Redhawks were 5-8 (2010-11) and 4-10 (2009-10) in Cape Girardeau during that time. This year's home start is Southeast's best since the 2003-04 campaign (8-2).
League Update
Southeast enters Thursday's matchup in a three-way tie for third in the Ohio Valley Conference standings. The Redhawks, Tennessee Tech and SIUE all have 3-1 league records. No. 14 Murray State presently sits atop the conference at 16-0 overall and 4-0 in the OVC. Eastern Kentucky is second with a 4-1 mark.
Southeast Continues to Climb in Field Goal Percentage
Southeast moved to 13th in the nation in field goal percentage. The Redhawks lead the Ohio Valley Conference with a 49.2 percent (421-of-855) clip this year. Southeast currently owns three of the OVC's top five field goal percentage marks.
Leon Powell (.739) leads the league, while
Marcus Brister (.584) and
Tyler Stone (.542) are second and fifth, respectively.
Series History
The Redhawks lead their all-time series against SIUE, 11-4. Southeast has won 10 of its last 12 meetings with the Cougars. The Redhawks are 2-0 against SIUE under head coach
Dickey Nutt. Southeast beat the Cougars, 68-49, in Cape Girardeau on Feb. 2, 2010 and, 83-63, in Edwardsville on Feb. 7, 2011. SIUE is in the final year of its four-year reclassification process to NCAA Division I. The Cougars, who had been Division II since their beginning in men's basketball during the 1967-68 season, will not be eligible for the NCAA Tournament during the process. Men's soccer and softball are the designated fast-track programs for SIUE. Those two teams are eligible for the NCAA Championships.
Red-Hot Redhawks
Southeast shot 50 percent or better from the field in each of its last four games. The Redhawks made a combined 54.2 percent (103-of-190) of their attempts over that span. Southeast shot 51.1 percent (24-of-47) vs. Morehead State (Dec. 28), 50 percent (25-of-50) vs. Jacksonville State (Jan. 2), 59.2 percent (29-of-49) at UT Martin (Jan. 5) and 56.8 percent (25-of-44) at Eastern Kentucky (Jan. 7). The Redhawks are the only team in the Ohio Valley Conference to shoot .500 or better in four-consecutive games this year.
Stone is Rolling
Tyler Stone led Southeast in scoring each of his last three starts. Stone, who averaged 19.3 points and 5.7 rebounds, while shooting 61 percent (25-of-41) from the field over that span, scored 24 points vs. Jacksonville State (Jan. 2), 16 points at UT Martin (Jan. 5) and 18 points at Eastern Kentucky (Jan. 7). Stone has finished as Southeast's top scorer in seven games this season. He earned his league-high fifth Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week award on Jan. 9.
