CONWAY, Ark. –
Tyler Stone scored 30 points and
Leon Powell added a double-double 26 points and 19 rebounds, but it wasn't enough, as Southeast Missouri (4-5) fell to Central Arkansas, 88-72, Monday night at the Farris Center.
UCA tainted Powell and Stone's dominating effort by scoring 24 points off turnovers and pitching in 26 second chance points. The Bears also outscored the Redhawks, 50-7, off the bench, handing Southeast its fifth-straight road loss.
Stone and Powell teamed up to score 56 points and grab 27 rebounds in a game where Southeast struggled on the perimeter.
"Our guard play is a real issue right now," said Southeast head coach
Dickey Nutt. "There is a lot we have to get corrected. Our bigs are consistent, but our guards need to get better."
Southeast, which trailed, 41-34, at the half, went on an 11-0 run to take the lead early in the second stanza.
The Redhawks stretch of 11 unanswered points came immediately after Jarvis Garner's jumper gave UCA a 43-34 lead just 37 seconds into the final period.
Nick Niemczyk drained a three-pointer to ignite the spree that ended with Powell splitting a pair of free throws to give Southeast a 45-43 edge with 16:50 remaining, its first lead since the 16:56 mark of the first half.
Southeast was within striking distance on two other occasions, but UCA responded with a three-pointer to silence each of those threats.
The Bears, who entered the game as the Southland Conference's worst three-point shooting team (20.5 percent), used a pair of trifectas by Chris Henson to pull away for good.
Shortly after Powell made two free throws to get Southeast a 47-46 lead with 15:10 left, Henson nailed a three-pointer to quickly regain the lead for UCA.
Then, after Stone threw down a dunk to cut UCA's lead to two at the 13:29 mark, Henson dialed up again from long range, this time giving his team a 55-50 cushion.
Henson's second three-pointer sparked an 11-0 run over the next 4:30, as UCA built a 66-50 lead and never looked back.
Garner's layup later gave UCA its biggest lead at 80-60 with 3:48 on the clock, before the Bears hammered down their third-consecutive win against the Ohio Valley Conference this year.
Both teams shot 50 percent from the field, and UCA held a +8 (42-34) advantage on the boards. Fifteen of the Bears rebounds came on the offensive glass. The Bears, who had no more than five three-pointers in a game this year, nearly matched their season-best, making 4-of-6 shots.
Garner led UCA with a double-double 16 points and 10 rebounds.
LaQuentin Miles, who played under Nutt during his first year at Southeast in 2009-10, added 16 points, five rebounds and a game-high six assists. Miles is currently the Southland Conference's top scorer.
Jordan Harks chipped in 11 points off the bench.
Stone made 12-of-18 field goals and 6-of-7 free throws on the same day he earned his second OVC Newcomer of the Week award. He also had eight rebounds and two blocks, becoming the third OVC player to score 30 or more points in a game this season.
Powell shot 11-of-16 from the field and 4-of-11 at the free throw line. He posted his second-straight double-double, with 10 of his 19 rebounds coming on the offensive end.
The rest of Southeast's team shot a combined 7-of-26 (26.9 percent) from the floor.
Additionally, Southeast finished with 18 turnovers, 11 of which came in the first half. The Redhawks made just 1-of-8 from three-point range and shot below 50 percent (47.8, 11-of-23) at the free throw line, as well.
Southeast, which has won four in a row at home, returns to Cape Girardeau to host UMKC Saturday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., CT, at the Show Me Center. Southeast's 2011 Hall of Fame class will be introduced during halftime of Saturday's game.
"Home has been good to us," commented Nutt. "We are playing with a lot more confidence on our homecourt."
