CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -
Tyler Stone had a double-double 18 points and 17 rebounds, and made the game-winning shot with four seconds left in overtime to lead Southeast Missouri (4-4) to a thrilling 63-61 victory over Southeastern Louisiana (4-3) Saturday night at the Show Me Center.
Logan Nutt dumped in a pass to Stone on the block, who turned and banked in his shot over Onochie Ochie to break a 61-61 tie in the extra period.
Southeastern Louisiana then had one final chance, but Brandon Fortenberry's three-point attempt bounced off the rim.
"We showed a lot of toughness tonight," said Southeast head coach
Dickey Nutt. "We let a double-digit lead slip away, but made the plays we needed to win the game."
Southeastern Louisiana went on a 9-0 run in the final 3:20 of regulation to send the game into overtime. The Lions overcame a 10-point deficit and tied the game at 54-54 when Fortenberry hit a pair of free throws with 18 seconds on the clock.
Southeast had a golden opportunity when
Marcus Brister was fouled with one second left, but Brister missed two free throws, forcing the extra period.
Leon Powell's conventional three-point play gave Southeast a 59-56 edge at the 3:45 mark of the overtime period, but Antonnio Benton drained a three-pointer to tie things up again.
Fortenberry would later hit two more big free throws to bring the game to a 61-61 deadlock, before Stone answered with his game-winner.
"It was a great pass by Logan," said Stone. "I had position and was able to lay it in. It was great to get the win."
Southeastern Louisiana scored nine of the game's first 11 points en route to building an early 9-2 lead. Jan Petrovcic scored five points and buried a three-pointer to key the run which ended on a Daron Populist layup with 16:58 left to play.
Southeast pulled to within one when Stone threw down a thunderous two-handed slam off a Brister alley-oop along the baseline.
Stone's dunk, which sent a jolt into the home crowd, sparked a 12-3 run over the final 5:22 of the first half.
On the next play, Stone stole the ball and tossed it ahead to Powell, who gave Southeast its first lead at 23-22 on an uncontested dunk with just under five minutes left.
Stone later added two more layups during the stretch that ended when Brister knocked down a jumper to give the Redhawks a 33-25 lead at the intermission.
Stone shot 7-of-13 from the field and a near-perfect 4-of-5 at the free throw line. His 17 rebounds marked an Ohio Valley Conference single-game high. In addition, Stone had 12 points and 12 rebounds in the first half alone.
Powell also had a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Meanwhile,
Corey Wilford and
Marland Smith each pitched in 11 points off the bench. Wilford turned in his first career double-digit scoring effort.
Southeast shot 75 percent (21-of-28) at the free throw line and did not miss a free throw (5-of-5) in overtime.
The Redhawks, who improved to 4-0 at the Show Me Center this season, are on a four-game home winning streak for the first time since 2007-08.
Southeast returns to action when it visits Central Arkansas Monday.
