PEORIA, Ill. - Taylor Brown converted a three-point play with 4.1 seconds left to give Bradley University (2-0) a 66-65 win over Southeast Missouri (1-2) Wednesday night in front of a sellout crowd of 4,340 at Renaissance Coliseum.
Brown, who scored seven of his 10 points in the final four minutes of the game, dribbled to his right and banked in a shot over Southeast's
Michael Porter. Brown, who drew a foul on the play, went to the free throw line to knock down the game-winning shot.
Southeast had one last chance, but
Marcus Brister's jumper bounced off the back of the iron.
"It was disappointing," said Southeast head coach
Dickey Nutt. "I thought we gave that one away. Defensively, we just weren't tough enough. We were in foul trouble and played tentatively late in the game."
The Redhawks led, 55-49, when
Corey Wilford buried a three-pointer with 10:53 left to play.
Brown then ignited his seven-point surge by hitting a pair of free throws and a jumper to grab the Braves a 63-60 edge with 2:47 remaining.
After Southeast pulled ahead, 64-63, on
Leon Powell's layup at the 1:31 mark, the Redhawks had a golden opportunity to extend the lead when
Marland Smith went to the free throw line to shoot two with 20 seconds on the clock. Smith, one of the Redhawks best free throw shooters, missed his second attempt.
Brown then seized his opportunity to capitalize on Bradley's final possession.
Southeast was the first NCAA Division I opponent to play on Bradley's campus since 1981-82. The 1981-82 Bradley squad was honored at haltime as part of a throwback night and the Redhawks nearly sent the Braves to their first loss of the season.
Southeast and Bradley went back-and-forth in a barn-burner which saw nine ties and 12 lead changes.
The Redhawks led, 16-11, when Brister dropped in a layup with 12:15 in the first half.
After Porter's jumper gave Southeast an 18-14 advantage at the 11:26 mark, neither team would lead by more than three points the rest of the half.
Brister later drove the length of the court to make a layup as time expired, sending the game to a 34-34 deadlock at the intermission.
Southeast outrebounded Bradley, 20-13, in the opening stanza and dominated the offensive glass by a count of 8-1. The Braves countered by shooting a blistering 59.1 percent (13-of-22) from the field.
Brister led Southeast with a career-high 19 points, his sixth-straight double-digit game dating back to last season. He also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists in 34 minutes.
Powell, who scored 11 second-half points, followed with 15 in his first start of the season. He began the year making 14-consecutive field goals prior to his first miss with 5:32 remaining in the game.
Tyler Stone added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
In addition, the Redhawks shot 52 percent (13-of-25) in the game's final 20 minutes, but had three players (
Nino Johnson, Porter, Powell) with four fouls.
All five Bradley starters scored double figures. Jordan Prosser paved the way with 15 points, Dyricus Simms-Edwards followed with 13, Walt Lemon, Jr., had 11 and Brown and Shayok Shayok each chipped in 10.
The Braves shot 55.3 percent (26-of-47) from the field on the night.
Southeast dropped to 102-182 all-time against Missouri Valley Conference opponents.
The Redhawks head west to the University of Oregon Sunday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m., CT.
