Baseball Continues OVC Play at SIUE, Series to Be Altered
Southeast Missouri Baseball (17-12, 4-2 OVC) will be on the road this weekend to continue Ohio Valley Conference play at SIUE (12-15, 5-1 OVC) in a matchup between the two top teams in the league. Due to weather, the series is up-in-the-air as to when it will be held. Continue to check semoredhawks.com and @SEMOBaseball on X for the latest updates. The series will take place at Roy E. Lee Field at Simmons Baseball Complex in Edwardsville, Illinois.

Sawyers vs. SIUE
Head Coach Andy Sawyers enters the weekend with a 14-7 overall record against SIUE having taken two-of-three a season ago in Cape Girardeau. The Redhawks scored a combined 37 runs in that series including a 13-3 run-rule "get away day" victory in the series finale. The weekend will mark the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th times these two have squared off on the diamond.

Midweek Recap
The Redhawks had their five-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday night in a back-and-forth affair with Evansville from Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville, Ind. SEMO fell 7-6 after a ball in the eighth inning kicked up off the second base bag, with two outs, and into center field to allow the go-ahead Purple Ace to come across to score. The Redhawks tied it in both the seventh and eighth innings with a solo home run from Bryce Cannon, and an RBI single to right field by catcher Shea McGahan, respectively, but the RBI single in the bottom of the eighth proved to be enough as UE held on for the victory.

Tuesday Starter
RHP Mason Pennington made his second-straight Tuesday start, and his third midweek start of the season against Evansville. The RHP from Collinsville, Oklahoma tossed 2.2 innings and recorded four strikeouts. That number marked a career-high and is the second time in five appearances Pennington has recorded four K's.

Hot Corner
Third baseman Caleb Corbin has been hot at the plate, recording at least a hit in four-of-his-last-five-games. In three of the four, Corbin has had multi hit days including Tuesday night where he recorded his second double of the 2025 season. The double marked the sixth of Corbin's career. On the year he is batting .280 with 21 hits, two doubles, and four home runs. He has driven in 13 RBIs and has drawn 14 walks.

Runs Batted In
Center fielder Michael Mugan, first baseman Bryce Cannon, and right fielder Cole Warehime have made up the heart of the batting order for most of the season as the trio makes up the top three RBI producers on the team heading into the weekend. Warehime leads the club with 25 RBIs, followed by Mugan (24) and Cannon (21). The trio has driven in 70 of 171 RBIs total for the club.

Good Eye
Infielder Brooks Kettering has displayed his plate discipline all season long as he leads the team with 23 walks after leading the squad in 2024. Kettering ranks first in the Ohio Valley Conference in walks and has an on-base percentage of .438.

Over .300
Four Redhawks enter the third weekend of OVC play with a batting average north of .300. Michael Mugan, Shea McGahan, and Cole Warehime have averages of .336, .308, and .304, respectively. Freshman Caleb Champion, who has 22 at-bats on the season, leads the club with a .409 average.

Earned Run Average
RHP Nathan Mertens and LHP Haden Dow rank in the top three of the OVC in ERA. Mertens has the lowest ERA in the league with a 2.83 mark followed by Dow in third with a 3.38 ERA. The duo is tied for the most wins on the team with three each.

Strike 'Em Out
Both Dow and Mertens are among the conference's best in striking out opposing hitters. Dow ranks second in the OVC with 39 strikeouts while Mertens ranks sixth with 34. Of SEMO's 257 strikeouts as a team, Dow and Mertens have recorded 73 combined K's.

No Free Passes
The Redhawks pitching staff has been one of the best in the league at not surrendering walks to their opponents led by Dow and Mertens. The duo has each given up three walks, the lowest mark in the OVC. As a staff, SEMO pitching has surrendered just 78 walks in 29 games.

Flame Thrower
RHP Gavin Johnston came out of the bullpen on Tuesday night for another great outing from the righty. Johnston surrendered zero walks for the ninth time this season and for the 30th time in his career. He also did not allow a run for the eighth time in 2025 and the 29th time in his career. The junior from Arnold, Missouri has 12 appearances on the season.

Consistent Lefty
LHP Ethan Osborne made his eighth appearance of the season on Tuesday night coming out of the bullpen. Osborne did not allow a walk for the eighth time, marking the 34th time he has made an appearance without a walk in his career. He is the only pitcher on the staff without a walk allowed this year. He also kept UE off the board, marking the fifth time this season without allowing a run and the 28th time in his career.

Miscellaneous
The Redhawks enter the weekend with a 17-12 record overall as the weekend marks the second road series in OVC play this season. On the road, SEMO Baseball holds a 5-8 record overall. The Redhawks are also lethal in the final third of the game with a 14-1, 15-1, and 14-1 record leading after the sixth, seventh, and eighth inning(s), respectively.
