CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri Baseball (17-18, 7-4 OVC) dropped the second game of the series with Southern Indiana (15-20, 5-6 OVC) on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 12-6 at Capaha Field.
Saturday's contest was a complete opposite of game one as the game featured 26 combined hits as USI edged SEMO, 17-11, in the hit column.
Offensively, SEMO was led by outfielders
Ty Stauss and
Josh Cameron who finished with three and two hits, respectively. Stauss finished 3-for-5, while Cameron was 2-for-4 with his seventh home run of the season in the eighth inning.
Cameron's blast was one-of-three home runs in the ball game for the Redhawks. Catcher
Shea McGahan and
Ben Palmer left the yard in the contest. Palmer's blast was his 11
th of the season (team leader).
USI got on the board first in the second inning against RHP
Sam Heyman (3-2). Designated hitter Jack Ellis hit a two-run home run to right field to make it 2-0 USI.
Another Eagle run in the third inning made it 3-0 before the Redhawks got on the board with an RBI single by second baseman
Brooks Kettering.
After the third inning, SEMO trailed 3-1.
USI tacked on another run in the fourth inning, before a five-run fifth inning busted the game wide open and led 9-1 before SEMO came to the plate in the fifth inning.
The Redhawks would claw back with a two-run response in the home half beginning with McGahan's solo home run to right field and ending with Palmer's solo home run to right-center with two outs to cut the USI lead to 9-3.
A wild pitch would bring in McGahan in the seventh inning, and Cameron's eighth inning blast was all SEMO would score. USI would add two insurance runs in the ninth inning with the second home run of the day from short stop Caleb Niehaus.
USI held on for the 12-6 victory to force a rubber match on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m., CT. at Capaha Field.
