Redhawks Continue 2022-23 Season with Pair of SEC Road Tests at Ole Miss Thursday and Missouri Sunday
Southeast Missouri women's basketball (1-0) continues its 2022-23 season with a pair of road contests against Southeastern Conference opponents this week. The Redhawks will face Ole Miss (1-0) Thursday evening at SJB Pavilion in Oxford, Mississippi, before heading to take on in-state foe Missouri (1-0) Sunday afternoon at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Missouri. 
 
Missouri will host Bradley Thursday ahead of Sunday's game with the Redhawks.

Series History
Ole Miss 
Ole Miss leads the all-time series with SEMO, 3-1. The Redhawks won the most recent meeting between the two schools, 70-53, on Dec. 14, 2019, in Oxford, Mississippi. 
 
Tesia Thompson scored a game-high 16 points to surpass 1,000 in her career as SEMO (6-2) toppled Ole Miss (5-5), 70-53, at the SJB Pavilion. With the win, SEMO knocked off a SEC opponent on the road for the first time in program history. The victory was the Redhawks second against a SEC foe and first since they beat Missouri, 90-71, at home on Nov. 24, 1998.
 
Thompson led four SEMO starters in double figures to become the 10th member of the Redhawks 1,000-point club. She shot 8-of-19 from the field and pulled down nine rebounds. She also dished out two assists and had a pair of steals.
 
Carrie Shephard and Taelour Pruitt followed with 14 points each. Shephard buried four 3-pointers. Jessie Harshberger contributed 11 points as the Redhawks shot 44.9 percent (31-of-69) from the floor, including a 56.3 percent clip in the third quarter.
 
Missouri
Missouri leads SEMO in the all-time series, 17-1. The Tigers won the most recent meeting between the two schools, 74-32, on Dec. 2, 2015, in Columbia, Missouri. 
 
Olivia Hackmann led SEMO with 12 points, while Connor King finished with eight rebounds with a pair of blocks in 28 minutes. Erin Bollmann put up six points and four rebounds in the game.
 
SEMO beat Missouri 90-71 on Nov. 24, 1998, at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. 

Scouting the Opponent
Ole Miss 
The Rebels started their season out with a dominant 72-60 win over Kennesaw State Monday night at the SJB Pavilion in Oxford, Mississippi. Angel Baker and Madison Scott led the Rebels with 16 points. Scott began her season with a double-double, grabbing 10 boards. 
 
Snudda Collins put up 14 points with a career night at the line, going 7-of-8 from the foul line. Destiny Salary rounded out the offense with 12 points off the bench.
 
Scott, the 2020-21 SEC Freshman of the Year, was named a member of the coaches Preseason Second-Team All-SEC team while the Rebels were selected to finish eighth overall in 2022-23.
 
Ole Miss went 23-9 and 10-6 in the SEC this past season. The Rebels appeared in the NCAA Tournament, facing South Dakota in the First Round.
 
Missouri
The Tigers are 1-0 after a 68-51 win over Missouri State on Monday, Nov. 7. 
 
Led by a 17-point performance by senior forward Hayley Frank, Mizzou was able to gain control of the contest late in the first quarter and led 31-17 at the break. Frank added four rebounds and three assists. Junior guard Sara-Rose Smith aided the winning effort with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Hansen poured in seven points in the third quarter and finished the evening with nine points and three boards. Katlyn Gilbert added nine points in her Missouri debut. 
 
Frank was named to the Preseason All-SEC Second Team as the Tigers were selected to finish 12th in the conference. 
 
Mizzou saw postseason action during the 2021-22 season, going to the WNIT after an 18-13 campaign (7-9 SEC).
 
Redhawks Ole Miss Connection
SEMO Assistant Coach Kelsey Johnson most recently served as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Mississippi under head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin in 2021-22.
 
As the Rebels' graduate assistant, Johnson was a part of an Ole Miss program that ranked in the Top 25 for the first time since 2007. She assisted with in-game offensive schemes and adjustments, aided in skill development through individual workouts, managed game film primarily on the offensive side of the court, and assisted with the planning and implementation of July recruiting schedules, camp organization, coaches travel, and official visit procedures. 
 
During Johnson's time with the Rebels, she was also a part of the first 20-win season Mississippi has had since the 2006-07 season and second 10-win season since 1991-92. She went to the First Round of the NCAA Tournament with Ole Miss during her tenure in Oxford, Mississippi. 
 
Johnson also aided in developing First Round WNBA draft pick Shakira Austin and the SEC Sixth Woman of the Year award recipient, Angel Baker.
 
UHSP Season-Opener Recap
Four Redhawks finished in double-digits scoring as SEMO overcame the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy, 60-48, Monday at the Show Me Center.
 
Kiyley Flowers and Kennedi Watkins led SEMO with 11 points each while Rahmena Henderson and Kori Tomlin each chipped in 10. Flowers also registered four rebounds, four steals, and an assist, while going 3-for-4 from three-point range in her Redhawks debut. 
 
Watkins, a 2022-23 Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference Selection, hauled down seven boards to pace the Redhawks to go with two steals and a block while shooting 40 percent.
 
She has now registered four-straight double-digit games dating back to the 2021-22 season. 
 
Henderson, a junior Kilgore College transfer from Neptune, New Jersey, made her first career start at SEMO, shooting 4-for-14 (2-for-4 on threes) with five rebounds, three steals, a block, and an assist for 10 points in a team-high 34 minutes. 
 
Halle Smith totaled five points including a three-pointer to go with three rebounds in the start. 
 
Jaliyah Green forced a team-high four steals with two rebounds in the start. 
 
Welcome Back Sophie Bussard!!
Redshirt junior Sophie Bussard returned to the hardwood Monday after suffering a season-ending injury prior to the 2021-22 campaign. The Silver Lake, Indiana, native, started in all 26 games as a sophomore in 2020-21 and was fourth on the Redhawks with 230 points (8.8 points/game) while leading the conference in court time.
 
On Monday against UHSP, Bussard totaled eight points with six rebounds in 29 minutes off the bench. Bussard also recorded an assist, a block, and a steal in the contest while shooting 3-for-7.
 
New Faces
Six SEMO student-athletes made their Redhawk debuts in the season opener Monday against University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy including freshman Alecia Doyle and junior Rahmena Henderson who were both featured in the Starting Five. 
 
Doyle, a Herrin, Illinois, native, tallied five points (2-for-10) with five boards, two assists, and a steal in 22 minutes. 
 
Tamia Stallings grabbed a pair of rebounds with a block. 
 
Tyra Brown, Julia Sion and Kiyley Flowers also made their SEMO debuts in the win.

Oh Captains, My Captains
Head coach Rekha Patterson announced on October 31, Kori TomlinSophie Bussard, and Tamia Stallings were selected as team captains for the 2022-23 season. This year is the first for the trio in the leadership roles. 
 
Watkins Named to 2022-23 Preseason All-OVC Team
Sophomore forward Kennedi Watkins was named to the 2022-23 Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference Women's Basketball Team, the league announced Oct. 18.
 
For Watkins, a Ballwin, Missouri, native, the preseason OVC honor is the first in her career.
 
She was named OVC Freshman of the Week twice during the 2021-22 season and was fourth on the team offensively with 207 points (8.3ppg). Watkins led SEMO with 17 blocks and competed in 25 games with 13 starts as a true freshman. She hauled down 138 rebounds (5.5rpg) with 32 steals. Watkins shot .446 from the field and finished in double-figures scoring 12 times and had double-digit rebounds twice. She registered a career-high 14 points on three occasions in 2021-22 including both conference games against SIUE. In OVC contests, Watkins averaged 8.8 points with 5.3 boards. 
 
Redhawks Eighth in OVC Preseason Poll
Southeast Missouri was selected to finish the season eighth in the OVC with 61 total points.
 
Tennessee Tech was picked to finish first overall in the league in 2022-23. The Golden Eagles earned 11 first place votes for 147 total points and had three players listed on the preseason team in Jada Guinn, Jordan Brock, and Anna Walker. TTU notched a 21-11 overall mark (14-4 OVC) in 2021-22 and finished as the OVC Tournament Runners-up to Belmont. The Golden Eagles competed in two rounds of the 2022 WNIT Tournament. 
 
Lariah Washington of Eastern Illinois was named the 2022-23 Preseason OVC Player of the Year.
  
Team Makeup
The Redhawks return four starters from the 2021-22 season in senior guard Kori Tomlin along with sophomores Kennedi WatkinsHalle Smith, and Jaliyah Green.
 
The trio of Watkins, Smith, and Green combined for five OVC Freshman of the Week honors last season.
 
Other returners from the 2021-22 squad include redshirt junior Sophie BussardChandler DavisJulia SionMichaela Mayfield, and Diona Reed
 
Sion will make her Redhawks debut after transferring to SEMO midseason (Jan. 2022) from North Alabama.
 
The Redhawks also added six newcomers including four transfers in Tyra Brown from Coastal Carolina, Tamia Stallings from Alabama State, Rahmena Henderson from Kilgore College, and Kiyley Flowers from Grand Canyon.
 
The roster also features a pair of freshmen in Tykara Harrison and Alecia Doyle.
 
Head coach Rekha Patterson returns for her eighth season at the helm of the program.
 
SEMO went 6-23 in 2021-22 with a 2-16 OVC mark. 
 
2022-23 Schedule
The Redhawks will compete in 29 total games including 14 at the Show Me Center this season. 
 
SEMO's non-conference schedule features 11 games including five home matchups starting against UHSP (Nov.7), followed by LeMoyne-Owen College (Nov. 18), Rust College (Dec. 1), Western Illinois (Dec. 7) and Illinois-Chicago (Dec. 20). 
 
The Redhawks take a trip to Oxford, Mississippi, on Nov. 10 to take on Ole Miss for their first road contest, before continuing the week at Missouri (Nov. 13). 
 
SEMO celebrates Thanksgiving at UCF's (Central Florida) Tournament Nov. 26-27 in Orlando, Florida, playing Rhode Island and UCF. 
 
Following that trip, SEMO will face Kansas (Dec. 4) and Evansville (Dec. 18).
 
The Redhawks will then play an 18-game double round-robin OVC schedule, starting at Southern Indiana on Dec. 29.
 
Looking Ahead
Following the pair of road games at SEC opponents this week, SEMO will return to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, to host LeMoyne-Owen College Friday, Nov. 18 at the Show Me Center. First tip is set for 6:30 p.m., CT.
