CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Cayla Koerner netted the equalizer in the 74th minute to push Southeast Missouri women's soccer (6-5-2, 2-1-2 OVC) unbeaten streak to four (2-0-2) and draw with Ohio Valley Conference leader Morehead State (6-4-3, 3-0-2 OVC), 1-1, Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Houck Field.
With the win, SEMO earned a point in the OVC standings and is currently fifth with eight points.
Trailing the contest 1-0, Koerner evened the match at 1-1 at 73:14 off a pass from fellow freshman
Zoe Houston.
For Koerner it was her fourth goal of the season (third in OVC play) and third in the last four games. The freshman from Mahomet, Illinois, paced the Redhawks this week with two goals (four points) on four shots (3 SOG).
Koerner registered three shots (2 SOG) in 61 minutes Sunday.
For Houston, it was her second career helper. The freshman from St. Charles, Missouri, finished with a career-high three shots (2 SOG) in 74 minutes (PR) in her fourth career start at SEMO.
Nicole Fiantaco provided the Eagles a 1-0 edge with a goal off a header via a free kick service from Madelyn Mozeleski at 50:18.
Fiantaco paced MSU with three shots (2 SOG) and Kate Larbes added two shots on goal.
SEMO led the shot differential (14-10, 10-6 SOG) the whole match and continued the intensity in the second half. The Redhawks led shots, 7-3 (5-1 SOG) in the first half, before a 7-7 (5-5 SOG) final 45 minutes.
Emma Brune (1 SOG) and
Elizabeth Rater (2 SOG) both registered a pair of shots Sunday, while
Megan Heisserer,
Alayna Jakul, and
Emma Tucker each had a shot on goal.
Zoey Memmel added a shot.
Sophia Elfrink made five saves to improve to 6-5-2 (2-1-2 OVC) in 2022. Erin Gibbs tallied nine saves in net for Morehead State.
Amy McGimsey was assessed a yellow card in the 40th minute Sunday.
Brune (11th straight, 12th in 2022),
Maddie Paulson (sixth in last seven games), and
Natalie Jackson (13 of 13 in 2022) all competed in the full 90 minutes as field players for SEMO Sunday.
