Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision to North Alabama Sunday

FLORENCE, Ala. — Southeast Missouri soccer dropped a close contest to North Alabama, 2-1, on Sunday at the Cox Creek Sports Complex. Despite a strong showing with five saves, the Redhawks couldn't overcome the Lions' two goals from 22 shots.
The match commenced with the Redhawks (1-2-1) taking an early lead through a goal by Rachel Kretzer, the first of her college career, after a shot off the crossbar by Riley Henderson to register the assist in the ninth minute. The Lions (3-0-1) responded with sustained pressure, eventually equalizing when Monica Yoder scored in the 14th minute, assisted by Gizelle El Assal and Meg Welsh. Despite several attempts from both sides, the first half concluded with the score tied 1-1.
The Lions goal in the first half was the first goal conceded by SEMO in the first half of any game this season.
The Redhawks faced a challenging second half as North Alabama increased its offensive pressure. Despite an early shot by Alessia Petkovski that went over the top, Southeast Missouri struggled to find the back of the net. SEMO was held without a shot on goal for the second 45 minutes. The Lions capitalized on their opportunities, scoring the decisive goal in the 63rd minute with a strike by Charlotte Sobotka, assisted by Lilly Ford from a free kick. Natalie Allison made several key saves to keep the game within reach, but the Redhawks were unable to equalize. The period ended with North Alabama leading 2-1, concluding the game with that score.
