CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri track & field will head out on the road Friday and Saturday to compete at Indiana State's John Gartland Invitational. The meet will be contested at ISU's North Gym at the College of Health and Human Services.
The event will kick off on Friday with the first day of multis. The women's pentathlon will begin at 4:15 p.m., CT followed by the men's heptathlon at 4:25 p.m.
Saturday morning, the Invitational will get underway at 9 a.m. with the second day of the men's heptathlon. Following the heptathlon, the meet will begin at 11 a.m. with the women's weight throw.
The Redhawks will compete against host, Indiana State, Southern Illinois, Milwaukee, Marian and Western Illinois at the John Gartland Invitational.
SEMO had a very strong showing in its home Redhawks Invite Jan. 15 at the SEMO Rec Center.
Four student-athletes grabbed Ohio Valley Conference Athlete of the Week Awards, the league announced Wednesday, after their performances at the Redhawks Invite.
Nicole Humphreys was named the Co-Female Field Athlete of the Week while
Luke Hatfield-Jackson earned Male Field Athlete of the Week.
Terrico Garrett was named Co-Male Track of the Week and
Marshall Swadley picked up Male Freshman of the Week honors.
Humphreys won shot put and weight throw at her second-straight indoor meet this season for back-to-back OVC weekly honors. Humphreys registered a career-best shot-put mark of 46-10.25 (14.28m) and also took the weight throw title with a distance of 62-2.25 (18.95m).
Hatfield-Jackson overcame a height of 6-9.75 (2.08m) for the men's high jump title.
Shea DeGraaf (6-4.75, 1.95m),
Jon Bissell (6-2.75, 1.90m) and
Isaac Readnour (5-10.75, 1.80m) went second through fourth after Hatfield-Jackson.
Hatfield-Jackson also won the long jump and has opened the 2021-22 season with four-straight titles over long jump and high jump. He compiled a long jump of 24-10.50 (7.58m).
DeGraaf was third (22-6.50, 6.87m) followed by Readnour (22-0.75, 6.72m, fourth),
Victor Mathuthu (21-2.5, 6.46m, fifth) and Bissell (20-9.75, 6.34m, sixth) in the men's long jump.
Swadley won the shot put with a personal-best distance of 53-2.75 (16.22m).
Garrett took first in the men's 800 meters, completing the race in 1:59.30.
Markeith Crawford (2:00.02, third),
Justin Splitt (2:00.09, fourth),
Austin Perkins (2:03.16, fifth) and
Kory Snyder (2:08.74, sixth) also repped the Red and Black in the race.
Megan Deimeke finished as the runner-up in both throwing events, competing unattached. Deimeke tallied a shot put feat of 42-11.75 (13.10m) and a weight throw of 58-4.00 (17.78m).
Makenzie Williams was third in both throwing events with 37-6.75 (11.45m, shot put) and 53-1.50 (16.19m, weight throw).
Clay Alewelt (50-4, 15.34m) and
Dylan Clark (47-5, 14.45m) took second and third in the shot put behind Swadley.
Clark (63-5, 19.33m), Swadley (56-10, 17.32m) and Alewelt (54-9.50, 16.70m) also finished second through fourth in the weight throw.
Logan Blomquist won the event, posting a mark of 69-2 (21.08m) as an unattached athlete.
Sandrea Cogio paced the Redhawks women in the 55 meters, with a time of 7.43 for third.
Leanza Dwaah (7.47, fourth),
Lauryn James (7.51, fifth) and
Serena Williams (7.55, sixth) followed in the event finals.
Breanna Miles qualified first overall in the sprint in 7.27.
Brock Wood secured fourth in the 55 meters finals in 6.70 after qualifying second overall.
In the 55-meter hurdles,
Kaitlyn McGinnitey won the event in 8.48 after qualifying first overall in the preliminaries.
She also won the high jump, clearing 5-1.75 (1.57m) to tie for the title with
Sophie Dubis and
Ellie Gamradt.
Serena Williams posted a height of 4-11.75 (1.52m) for fourth.
Anthony Forrest completed the men's event in 7.99 for second overall.
Dillon Lay was third (8.15) and
Jon Bissell concluded the hurdles in 8.74 (sixth).
Cogio was second in the 200 meters with a finish of 27.94.
Erika Mellor placed fourth and
Claire Morrill (32.33, ninth) also ran in the race for the SEMO women.
Xzavier Bartlett and
Markeith Crawford went third and fourth in the men's race, finishing in 24.04 and 24.14, respectively.
Garrett (24.70, seventh) and
Austin Perkins (25.22, eighth) also ran in the distance for the SEMO men.
Miles and
Kaylee Eakin combined for a one-two finish in the 400 meters, crossing the finish line in 1:02.64 and 1:03.66, respectively.
Bartlett finished as the runner-up in the men's 400 meters with a time of 53.55 and
Colin Schwab was fourth (54.88).
Morrill led a contingent of Redhawks distance runners in the 800 meters. The senior from Cape Girardeau, Missouri, won the race in 2:17.05 followed by
Madelyn Gray (2:22.97),
Taylor Fox (2:24.12), Mellor (2:25.54),
Katie Wegmann (2:25.70),
Haley Smith (2:31.44) and
Brianna Payton (2:33.54).
Wegmann took first in the mile, posting a mark of 5:16.47.
Hannah Eastman was second (5:21.88), trailed by Gray (5:22.46, third), Fox (5:23.61, fourth),
Jane Boessen (5:25.77, fifth), Smith (5:28.22, sixth),
Maddie Keller (5:31.14, seventh),
Mackenzie Pugh (5:44.05, eighth) and
Sarah Russom (5:44.94, ninth).
The SEMO men finished second through ninth in the mile led by Splitt who was clocked at 4:26.29 for second.
Noah Little (4:27.00),
Nick Cimmarusti (4:27.45), Snyder (4:32.82),
Seth Gleason (4:33.49),
Thomas Doss (4:37.39),
Clayton Eftink (4:37.74) and
Aaron Modrow (4:47.39) rounded out the finishers.
Boessen followed that performance with a first place showing in the 3,000 meters, tallying a time of 11:00.99. Russom took second (11:04.06) followed by Keller (11:04.48), Eastman (11:06.64) and Pugh (11:41.88).
Cimmarusti captured first in the 3,000 meters in a personal-best 9:00.20. Little was second in 9:00.20 (PR) followed by Gleason (9:11.36) and Eftink (9:19.81, PR).
Skylar Prescott and
Baily Griffiths took first and second in the women's pole vault competition. Prescott surpassed 9-6.25 (2.90m) and Griffiths posted a feat of 9-0.25 (2.75m).
Jack Rinehart, a junior from Jackson, Missouri, won the men's pole vault with 14-5.25 (4.40m).
The SEMO women took the first through fourth slots in the long jump. James paced the Redhawks with a distance of 19-2.00 (5.84m) and McGinnitey was second with 17-10.75 (5.45m).
Serena Williams had a jump of 17-6.00 (5.33m) and
Ciara Potter finished with 17-2.25 (5.24m).
The Redhawk women's 4x400 meter relay teams finished first and second to conclude the Invite. The top team of Miles, Eakin, Wegmann and Morrill was clocked at 4:11.32 followed by Mellor, Smith, Fox and Gray who combined for a time of 4:21.68.
On the men's side, the Redhawks top two relay teams went first and second as well. Bartlett, Crawford, Readnour and Schwab completed the 4x400 meter relay in 3:34.72 and Perkins, Garrett, Splitt and Snyder were second in 3:34.72.
Next up for the Redhawks will be a trip back to the Hoosier State where they will compete at Indiana's IU Relays, January 28-29 in Bloomington, Indiana.
