Redhawks Host Austin Peay and Murray State in Pair of Weekend OVC Duals

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri women's tennis (9-4, 2-0 OVC) will host Austin Peay (5-2, 0-1 OVC) and Murray State (6-6, 2-0 OVC) this weekend at the Redhawks Tennis Complex. First service for the match with the Governors is set for Friday at 1 p.m., CT. The dual with the Racers is set for Saturday at 2 p.m., CT.

Saturday's Aces for Alex match against Murray State will be played in support of Alex Powderly who is battling childhood cancer. Alex, 17, is the cousin of SEMO tennis player Grace Powderly and currently attends Cape Central High School. SEMO will wear gold ribbons in support of childhood cancer and Alex who is a huge Redhawks supporter.
 
The Redhawks enter the pair of home duals on a five-match win streak after a 7-0 victory over Belmont on March 27 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Lera Valeeva, Ksenia Shikanova and Daniela Hlacikova each had a pair of victories in both the singles and doubles competitions in the competition held in the Music City.
 
Hlacikova and Teona Velkoska eased past Terra Sheldon and Drew Hawkins, 6-0, at no. 3 doubles before Valeeva and Shikanova beat Somer Henry and Lauren Carelli, 6-2, at the middle doubles slot. For both SEMO's doubles teams, the victories extended their respective win streaks to four.
 
Hlacikova beat Peyton Lee, 6-1, 6-0, at the second singles slot, to improve to 10-1 in 2021. The freshman from Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, has won her last four singles matches.
 
Romana Tarajova then defeated Henry, 6-1, 6-4, at the no. 1 lineup spot for her fourth consecutive win.
 
Shikanova overcame Hawkins, 7-5, 6-3, at no. 4 singles.
 
Kseniya Zonova fought past Erin Allen, 6-2, 6-7, 11-9, at the third singles position to extend the SEMO advantage to 5-0.
 
Vivian Lai edged Sheldon, 5-7, 7-5, 10-5, at no. 5 singles for her fifth consecutive win and Valeeva sealed the Redhawks victory with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Maria Plaksina at the final singles spot.
 
Austin Peay is 5-2 in 2021 and most recently dropped its first OVC dual to Jacksonville State, 4-3, on March 26.
 
Fabienne Schmidt was named the Co-Ohio Valley Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this season on Wednesday.
 
In singles action, Schmidt won her fifth-straight match of the season when she knocked off Jacksonville State's Carolina Bulatovic (6-2, 4-6, 6-1) on March 26. Schmidt leads the Governors with a 6-1 record in singles play this season, while playing exclusively from the No. 1 position.
 
In doubles play, Schmidt has partnered with Danielle Morris and the duo is off to a perfect 7-0 start this season from the No. 1 position. Last week, Schmidt and Morris beat Jacksonville State's Bulatovic and Malin Buechner (6-0) in the No. 1 doubles match without dropping a point.
 
Murray State has registered a 6-6 mark in 2021 and is perfect in OVC play with a 2-0 record. The Racers have beat Belmont and Jacksonville State with identical scores of 5-2 on March 20 and 27.
 
Sarah Bureau leads Murray State with an 8-4 singles mark in 2021, playing at the second, third and fourth slots. Marit Kreugel and Stasya Sharapova have posted a perfect 2-0 mark at no. 2 doubles during conference play.
 
The Racers will face UT Martin Friday before heading to Cape Girardeau to take on SEMO Saturday.
 
The Redhawks will next stay at home and host Jacksonville State Saturday, April 10 at the Redhawks Tennis Complex. The match will be SEMO's fifth OVC dual of the spring 2021 season.
