Redhawks Start 2021 Indoor Season Strong at Sycamore Team Challenge Saturday

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Southeast Missouri men's track & field finished second out of five teams at the Sycamore Team Challenge with 77 points Saturday at Indiana State's Indoor Track & Field Facility. The SEMO women placed fourth with 62 points in the Redhawks 2021 indoor track & field season opener.
 
Lauryn James finished fourth in the 60-meter dash in 7.91. Sandrea Cogio placed seventh (8.24) in her Redhawks debut. Victor Mathuthu, a UNC Asheville transfer, had a time of 7.20 in the men's prelims.
 
Breanna Miles won the 200 meters in her first collegiate meet, clocking in at 25.66. Leanza Dwaah took third (26.04) and Cogio completed the race in 28.26 (10th).
 
Dwaah also had a personal-best 400 meters time of 1:01.76 (sixth).
 
In the 800 meters, Tayler Gudde placed fourth in 2:23.70. Kendall Long also competed for SEMO, tallying a mark of 2:24.99 (sixth).
 
On the men's side, Markeith Crawford posted a time of 1:59.82 (sixth). Nick Bryant  (2:03.77, 11th) and Colin Schwab (2:09.39, 14th) also ran in the race for SEMO.
 
Brianna Payton then finished fourth in the mile, with a time of 5:27.59. Taylor Fox crossed the finish line right after in 5:28.20 (fifth) in her first meet at SEMO.
 
Austin Perkins completed the mile in 4:50.82 (11th).
 
In the men's 60 meters hurdles, SEMO finished second, fourth and fifth. Brock Wood led the men with a time of 8.52 for second in the finals. Dillon Lay was fourth (8.67) and Anthony Forrest was fifth (8.75) in his SEMO debut.
 
In the high jump, Ellie Gamradt was fourth after a jump-off for second at the meet. Gamradt overcame a height of 5-3.00 (1.60m) for fourth. Ciara Potter achieved a height of 4-11 (1.50m, ninth) in her Redhawks debut.
 
Michael Jenkins notched a high jump mark of 6-4.75 (1.95m) for runner-up in his SEMO debut. Tallyn Brazell was fourth with 6-2.75 (1.90m).
 
Nicole Silverlake paced the women in the pole vault, with a feat of 11-3.5 (3.44m) for third in her first career meet competing with SEMO across her chest. Katie Schumer was fourth with 10-9.5 (3.29m).
 
Shea DeGraaf, the 2020 OVC Indoor Heptathlon Silver Medalist, took second in the pole vault with a personal-best height of 15-1 (4.60m). Jack Rinehart was third (14-7.25, 4.45m).
 
Potter posted a distance of 17-5.5 (5.32m) in the long jump for fourth. James was seventh (17-0.75, 5.20m) and Kristen Carter had a mark of 15-10.25 (4.83m).
 
Potter also had a triple jump of 35-2.50 (10.73m) to take third in the women's competition.
 
Mathuthu had a long jump feat of 21-6.00 (6.55m) on the men's side. John Whitcomb also tallied a mark of 19-2.75 (5.86m).
 
In triple jump, Mathuthu was second (46-0.75, 14.04m) and Jenkins was third (44-6.25, 13.57m).
 
Nicole Humphreys led the women's throwers with fifth place finishes in both shot put (42-3.25, 12.88m) and weight throw (50-8.75, 15.46m). Makenzie Williams tallied distances of 49-8.50 (15.15m, sixth) in weight throw and 37-9.50 (11.52m, eighth) in shot put in her first career collegiate competition.
 
Dylan Clark posted a shot put mark of 47-0.75 (14.34m) for fifth to pace SEMO's men. Clay Alewelt had a mark of 44-6.75 (13.58m, seventh) in his Redhawk debut and DeGraaf had a career-best 42-0 (12.80m, ninth).
 
Clark also was the runner-up in weight throw with 53-2.75 (16.22m). Alewelt notched a distance of 47-7.00 (14.50, fifth).
 
The SEMO men's distance medley team of Crawford, Schwab, Bryant and Perkins completed the race in 11:29.47 (fourth).
 
Indiana State took first in both the men's (207 points) and women's (206) team competitions.
 
Miami (Ohio) women finished second (78) followed by Bradley (74) and Purdue Fort Wayne with 57 for fifth.
 
On the men's side, Miami (Ohio) was third (76), Purdue Fort Wayne was fourth (41) and Bradley took fifth (32).
 
SEMO returns to Cape Girardeau on Friday, Feb. 5 for the Redhawks Invite held at the SEMO Rec Center.  The Redhawks will compete against SIUE, UT Martin and Rhodes College in the first of two home indoor meets in 2021. SEMO will also host the Redhawks Open on Saturday, Feb. 20.
 
Pole Vault opens field events at the Redhawks Invite at 3:30 p.m. and running events commence at 6:30 p.m. with the 55-meter hurdles.
 
SEMO will start its 2021 outdoor season March 19-20 at the Auburn Invitational in Auburn, Alabama.
 
SEMO cross country next heads to Charleston, Illinois, on Saturday, Feb. 6 for the Eastern Illinois Spring Meet held at the Tom Woodall Panther Trail. The Redhawks conclude their regular season with Tennessee Tech's Golden Eagle Open on Friday, Feb. 19. The 2020-21 OVC Cross Country Championship will be held on March 1 in Clarksville, Tennessee, hosted by Austin Peay.
