
Redhawks Conclude Trip to Memphis Sunday with Setback to Tigers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis (2-3) concluded its trip to the Bluff City with a 7-0 setback to the American Athletic Conference's Memphis (2-3) Sunday at the Eldon Roark Tennis Center. The Redhawks split their pair of weekend matches in Memphis, notching a 4-3 decision over Lipscomb (0-5) Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers opened the dual with three wins in doubles to secure the point. Hannah Davies and Lina Hohnhold beat Lera Valeeva and Manuela Barriga, 6-2, at the third position before Laura Bente and Aran Teixido Garcia bested Kseniya Zonova and Romana Tarajova, 6-3, at no. 1 doubles.
Vivian Lai and Teona Velkoska then fell to Katherine Cao and Alisha Reayer, 6-4, at the middle doubles slot.
Memphis then completed the sweep with singles victories at the third, fourth, first, fifth, sixth and second lineup spots.
Teixido Garcia defeated Velkoska, 6-0, 6-1, and Davies overcame Barriga, 6-2, 6-0, at the third and fourth positions.
Zonova competed at no. 1 singles for the first time in 2020 Sunday. The senior from Kharkiv, Ukraine, knotted her match with Bente at 1-1, with a 6-4 second set after dropping the first set 7-5. Bente then earned the win with a 6-1 third frame.
Maja Lundell and Grace Powderly both made their dual debuts in 2020 at the fifth and sixth slots. Lundell fell to Monique Woog, 6-1, 6-0, and Powderly dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Lina Hohnhold.
Tarajova then battled to a 7-5, 7-6 loss to Reayer at the second singles spot to conclude the match.
Southeast next heads to Columbia, Missouri, for a doubleheader against Missouri on Saturday, Feb. 15. Matches are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Mizzou Tennis Complex.
