Athletics Alumni Spotlight: Roderick Johnson

Former Southeast Missouri men's basketball standout Roderick Johnson is in this week's Alumni Spotlight brought to you by SoutheastHEALTH.

Johnson is a name SEMO nation won't forget. He was a fixture of the program's only NCAA Tournament team in 1999-2000. Johnson was inducted into the SEMO Athletics Hall of Fame with the rest of that squad which also won the program's only Ohio Valley Conference regular-season and tournament titles.

A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Johnson landed in Cape Girardeau after playing college basketball at Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In two years at SEMO (1998-2000), he averaged 13.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and gathered 54 blocks, while shooting 58.5 percent (292-of-499) from the field in 60 games and 55 starts. Johnson earned Second-Team All-OVC honors and was OVC Tournament Most Valuable Player during his final season in 1999-2000. Additionally, the 1999-2000 club wrecked Murray State's 47-game home winning streak.

Today, Johnson is an officer with the Madison Police Department in his home state of Wisconsin. In 2017, he was promoted to Educational Resource Officer (ERO), a great fit given his excellent ability to work well with students, staff and parents. Johnson was assigned to La Follette High School, a place he spent a good deal of time at when filling in as a temporary ERO.

Johnson first joined the Madison Police Department in 2008 and also served as a patrol officer and officer in the Gang Unit leading up to his current position.

Basketball, which has played such an integral role throughout his life, runs deep in the Johnson family. Roderick and his wife, Stacy, have three sons that are playing or will play at the Division I level. Jalen is a freshman at Duke, Rod, Jr., is a graduate student at Western Illinois and Kobe committed to USC in September.
