Oxford Regional Field
Ole Miss (37-17) is the #11 national seed and serves as one of the 16 schools in the country to host an NCAA Regional this weekend. Louisiana, Southeast Missouri and Chattanooga (37-15) complete the Oxford Regional.
Party Like it's 1999
Southeast Missouri won the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament with a 4-1 record in Oxford, Alabama last weekend. The top-seeded Redhawks won their final three games of the tournament to claim the crown. SEMO needed to beat #2 Jacksonville State twice in the championship round and did so by scores of 8-2 and 6-5. The 2019 campaign marks the first time in 20 years where the Redhawks have won both the OVC regular-season and tournament titles, and advanced to an NCAA Tournament.
NCAA Tournament History
The Redhawks make their second NCAA Tournament appearance in 2019. Southeast Missouri last made the NCAA Tournament in 1999. That year, the Redhawks joined Arizona, Kansas and East Carolina at the Tucson, Arizona Regional. SEMO lost to Kansas, 5-1, 3-1, and beat East Carolina, 2-1.Â
OVC in the NCAA Tournament
Southeast Missouri represents the Ohio Valley Conference after locking down the league's automatic NCAA Tournament berth with its unbelievable run through the OVCÂ Tournament. OVC schools are 17-41 all-time in NCAA Tournament play. SEMOÂ is the first OVC team other than Jacksonville State to make the NCAA Tournament since 2015 (Tennessee Tech, Auburn Regional).
Sixth OVC Tournament Title
Southeast Missouri improved to 43-28 all-time in 18 appearances at the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. SEMO won its sixth OVC Tournament title in program history. The Redhawks claimed the OVC Tournament trophy in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2019. SEMO is the only team in league history to win the OVC Tournament four years in a row. Jacksonville State won the OVC Tournament every year it was in Oxford, Alabama (2016, 2017, 2018) until 2019.
Against the Field
Southeast Missouri is a combined 2-12 against Ole Miss (2-7), Chattanooga (0-2) and Louisiana (0-3). SEMO is 0-1 against both Chattanooga and Louisiana under head coach Mark Redburn. The Redhawks fell to Chattanooga, 8-5, at the Frost Classic on Feb. 24, 2018, a tournament they finished with a record of 5-1. SEMO's last meeting with Louisiana was in Gulf Shores, Alabama on Feb. 13, 2016. The then-#11 Ragin' Cajuns won that game by a score of 8-0. Meanwhile, the last time SEMO played Ole Miss was on Feb. 27, 2011 (L, 4-2).
NCAA Tournament Teams
The Redhawks faced five teams in this year's NCAA Tournament during the 2019 regular season. Southeast Missouri played Louisiana Tech (Feb. 16), Drake (Feb. 10, Feb. 22, Feb. 23), Arkansas (Feb. 21, Feb. 22), Missouri (Apr. 23) and Southern Illinois (Apr. 16). SEMO went 1-8 in those contests with its win coming over then-#12 Arkansas (6-1) in Fayetteville.
About the Ragin' Cajuns
#7 Louisiana enters this weekend's NCAA Regional with an overall record of 50-4. The Ragin' Cajuns are on a 27-game winning streak and haven't lost since Mar. 20 (5-4 to McNeese State in 11 innings). Louisiana nearly swept this year's specialty awards in the Sun Belt Conference. Shorstop Alissa Dalton was named Player of the Year, Summer Ellyson was tabbed Pitcher of the Year, outfielder Sarah Hudek was Newcomer of the Year and Gerry Glasco earned Coach of the Year. The Ragin' Cajuns went a perfect 28-0 between regular-season (25-0) and tournament (3-0) play in the Sun Belt this year. Louisiana is second in the nation in won-loss percentage (.926), second in ERA (1.37), second in stolen bases per game (3.1) and third in on-base percentage (.431). Ellyson, who is 37-4 with a 0.98 ERA, leads the nation in wins and ranks third with 324 strikeouts. Glasco, who took over the Louisiana program as head coach on Nov. 20, 2017, is a native of Crab Orchard, Illinois, which is one hour and 14 minutes from Cape Girardeau, Missouri. This year marks the 21st consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance for the Ragin' Cajuns.
Redburn Reaches 300 Career Wins
Mark Redburn picked up his 300th career win as a head coach when Southeast Missouri beat Eastern Kentucky, 11-8, on May 10. Redburn is now 302-350 in 15 years as a head coach. A total of 136 of those victories have come at SEMO. Seventy eight of Redburn's victories as the Redhawks head coach have come between the 2018 and 2019 seasons equating to 57.3 percent of his entire win total in five seasons at SEMO.
Messex Approaches All-Time Record in Games Started
Sarah Messex has never missed a start in her four-year career and has started 213 consecutive games at shortstop. She is one of five players who started all 61 games this season. Messex became the fifth player in Southeast Missouri softball history to start over 200 games. She will break the school's all-time career record in games started with two more. Renee Kertz presently holds the record with 214 starts from 2009-12.
OVC Awards
Mark Redburn was named the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year and junior outfielder Rachel Anderson was voted OVC Player of the Year. Redburn took home Southeast Missouri's sixth Coach of the Year honor in program history and Anderson was the first Redhawk to win the league's coveted Player of the Year award since 2001 (Jenny Doehring). Anderson was also the fifth SEMO player to secure the accolade. Senior pitcher Haley Thogmartin and junior first baseman Ashley Ellis joined Anderson as first-team selections, while junior outfielder Claudia Gallo claimed second-team accolades.
Arellanes is OVC Tournament MVP
Senior right fielder Mykaela Arellanes was voted the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player following an outstanding performance. Arellanes reached base seven times and went 4-for-6 with three runs scored, a double, home run, three walks, a stolen base and five RBI in two games against Jacksonville State on May 11. For the tournament, she hit .500 (8-for-16) with five runs scored, eight RBI and four walks. Arellanes is SEMO's first OVC Tournament MVP since outfielder Kelsey White took the honor in 1999. Outfielder Rachel Anderson, third baseman Addison Barnouski and pitcher Haley Thogmartin joined Arellanes on the All-Tournament Team.
Hot Redhawks
The Redhawks enter this weekend's NCAA Regional on a three-game winning streak and winners in eight of their last nine contests. Southeast Missouri is currently 7-1 in May.
Down Go the Gamecocks
Co-Ohio Valley Conference regular-season champions Southeast Missouri and Jacksonville State played five times this year with four of those matchups decided by a combined five runs. The Redhawks beat the Gamecocks in the championship round after JSU won seven OVC Tournaments in the past 12 years and hadn't lost in the final round since 2007.
Redhawks Beat Sims
Southeast Missouri handed Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year Faith Sims only her fifth loss of the season when it beat Jacksonville State, 8-2, to force a winner-take-all title game at last week's OVC Tournament. Sims had thrown every single pitch for the Gamecocks in the tournament until the Redhawks knocked her out of the game in the fourth inning. It was Sims' first loss in over a month (vs. Austin Peay, Apr. 5).
Gallo Squeezes Both Game-Winning Outs
Junior left fielder Claudia Gallo caught the final out in both victories in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship against Jacksonville State (May 11). Gallo caught fly balls off the bat of Anna Chisolm in both contests. Chisolm's fly ball in the title game came with the tying run on base and after the Gamecocks scored five runs in the sixth inning to make it a 6-5 game.
Fun Fact
Four players on this year's roster were born in 1999, the year Southeast Missouri last made an NCAA Tournament appearance. Kaylee Anderson (Mar. 4), Marisa Davis (Sept. 14), Danina Marton (Apr. 24) and Rachel Rook (Feb. 9) are in that group.
Against Ranked Teams
#7 Louisiana marks the second ranked opponent Southeast Missouri faces in 2019. The Redhawks are 1-17 all-time against ranked teams in their NCAA Division I era (since 1992). SEMO's lone win over a ranked team came under head coach Mark Redburn when the Redhawks knocked off then-#12 Arkansas (Feb. 22) in Fayetteville. The Redhawks registered 10 hits and knocked out All-SEC pitcher Mary Haff after 4.1 innings.Â
Power Five Wins
Mark Redburn collected two wins over Big 12 Conference member Kansas when the Redhawks won the Jayhawk Classic (Mar. 8-10). Redburn has six wins over Power Five schools as the Redhawks head coach. Redburn recorded half of those victories this season alone as Southeast Missouri also knocked off then-#12 Arkansas (Feb. 22). He beat Arkansas again, Missouri once and Georgia Tech once for his other Power Five wins.Â
Senior Class
Southeast Missouri's senior class consisting of Mykaela Arellanes, Parker Bandy, Mackenzie Long, Sarah Messex and Haley Thogmartinhave won a total of 117 games during their Southeast Missouri careers (2016-19). This year's senior class won the most games since the 1996-1999 group (141).Â
RPI Rating
Southeast Missouri boasts a RPI of 59 (through games May 11). Fellow Ohio Valley Conference member Jacksonville State (77) also ranked among the top 100 in RPI.Â
Anderson Breaks Single-Season HIts Record
Rachel Anderson became Southeast Missouri's all-time single-season hits leader with her RBI-single in her first at-bat of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament against Eastern Kentucky (May 9). Anderson has a total of 80 hits this season. She also established new single-season records in total bases (149) this year.
One Hit to 200
With just one more hit, Rachel Anderson will reach 200 in her three-year career at Southeast Missouri. Anderson has 199 and ranks fourth all-time in career hits at SEMO. Megan McDonald (222, 2005-08) was the last Redhawk to get 200 or more career hits.Â
More Records in Reach
Ashley Ellis, who leads Southeast Missouri and ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference with 16 home runs, needs just one round-tripper to break the school's single-season record. Ellis shares the top spot with Kayla Fortner (2015). Rachel Anderson is two triples away from breaking SEMO's single-season record of 10 held by Jayne Creek in 1981. Anderson is also three walks away from surpassing Fortner (37 walks, 2015) for the single-season record in that category. Anderson has 35 walks in 2019.
20-Win Pitcher
Haley Thogmartin is Southeast Missouri's first 20-win pitcher in the Redhawks NCAA Division I era. Thogmartin is 22-6 with a 1.75 ERA, nine complete games, three shutouts and three saves this year. She has struck out 137 in 167.2 innings. Missy Sanges (20-7) was the last Redhawks pitcher to win 20 games in 1989. Thogmartin passed Sanges for the fourth-place spot on SEMO's single-season wins list.
Most Games Played
Rachel Anderson, Mykaela Arellanes, Addison Barnouski, Ashley Ellis and Sarah Messex have started all 61 games this season and, as a result, stand tied for first on Southeast Missouri's single-season list in games played and games started. Anderson, Arellanes, Barnouski and Ellis will get the record in those categories when they are in the lineup against #7 Louisiana Friday.
That's Interesting
Southeast Missouri was awarded the #1 seed in the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament after winning a coin toss to break its tie with Jacksonville State. OVC Commissioner Beth DeBauche administered the coin flip at the league office in Brentwood, Tennessee 30 minutes after the conclusion of the doubleheader between Austin Peay and SIU Edwardsville on May 5. Had APSU swept SIUE, the Redhawks would have clinched the #1 seed and a coin flip would not have been necessary. Both school's names were put in a hat before the coin toss and JSU was drawn. JSU Head Coach Jana McGinnis called tails, but the coin landed heads giving SEMO the top seed. The Redhawks and Gamecocks had identical composite records (4-2) against Eastern Kentucky, Austin Peay and Murray State, which all finished tied at 16-6; the same records (1-1) against Belmont; the same records (2-0) against UT Martin; and the exact composite records (3-1) versus Tennessee Tech and SIUE which tied for eighth.Â
