Redhawks Host Broncos Friday at Houck
Southeast Missouri women's gymnastics welcomes Western Michigan to Houck Field House on Friday at 6:30 p.m., CT. The meet is the first of two straight home contests for SEMO.

Looking at the Opponent
Western Michigan enters the meet with a 2-1 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the Mid-American Conference. In three meets, the 33rd-ranked Broncos are averaging a total team score of 194.842 and just notched a season high of 195.675 against Bowling Green on Sunday. Freshman Morgan Spence won the all-around title with a 39.075 against BGSU and also tied with junior Rachael Underwood on beam (9.825). Underwood also tied for first on floor with a 9.875 and finished third on vault (9.825).
 
Brawner Named MIC Gymnast of the Week
Senior Alexis Brawner earned MIC Gymnast of the Week honors on Wednesday after she won individual titles in five of the six events she competed in this past weekend in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Brawner won floor (9.900), vault (9.825) and bars (9.800) at Penn and then took first in vault (9.800) and floor (9.875) and finished third on bars (9.75) in a quad meet at Temple with Ithaca and Cornell. The award marks the sixth career MIC honor for Brawner and her first in 2018. She is also the second Redhawk to win a MIC Weekly honor this season.
 
Philly Recap
Southeast opened their pair of weekend meets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a 192.700-192.200 win over Penn on Friday. The Redhawks recorded a season-best team score on beam with a 48.400 in the final rotation. Alexis Brawner won individual titles on floor, vault and bars. She matched her career-high of 9.900 on floor. Megan Dennis recorded her personal-best on beam (9.600) on Friday. Jordan Williams also posted career-bests on bars (9.575) and beam (9.750) Friday. Michael Sanders set a personal-record with a 9.700 on beam.
 
Samantha Gallet made her Redhawks debut over the weekend and competed on vault (9.525, 1/28/18) and bars (9.325, 1/28/18) at both meets.
 
On Sunday, SEMO finished third with a total team-score of 189.325 in a quad meet at Temple with Ithaca and Cornell. Brawner led Southeast with wins on vault (9.800) and floor (9.875). McKinzie Jones finished second on floor behind Brawner with a season-high score of 9.85 (second in 2018). Alana Fischer posted a season-high on bars with a score of 9.675 for third overall on the discipline, which is her highest career finish. McKenna Stanley also set a personal-best on floor with a 9.625.
 
Bates Wins MIC Newcomer of the Week
Freshman Lindsey Bates was named the MIC Newcomer of the Week on Wednesday, Jan. 17 after she won her first two career all-around titles against Illinois State (38.950 on 1/12/18) and Lindenwood (38.250 on 1/15/18).
 
First Win of 2018
The Redhawks earned their first win in 2018 when the team edged fellow MIC school, Illinois State, 193.300-191.175 on Friday, Jan. 12 in their home opener at Houck Field House. Acting head coach Brittney Emmons recorded her first career victory as head coach at the dual. Alexis Brawner won vault with a score of 9.775 and took the floor title with a 9.825. Brawner also tied with Lindsey Bates for the title on bars with Illinois State's Alyssa Wiggle with scores of 9.725. Bates also tied for first on beam with ISU's Gabrielle Cooke with a 9.700 and won her first career all-around crown with a personal-best 38.950.
 
Roster Breakdown
The Redhawks are relatively young with seven freshmen and five sophomores. Top returners for Southeast include 2017 MIC All-Around and Vault Champion, Alexis Brawner, McKenna Stanley along with juniors Allyson Bell and McKinzie Jones. Brawner also earned MIC Gymnast of the Year in 2016 and represented SEMO at the NCAA Regionals in the all-around competition the past two seasons.
 
2017 in Review
SEMO placed fifth at the MIC Championship in 2017 behind Lindenwood, Texas Woman's, Illinois State and Illinois-Chicago. The Redhawks will look to improve on their 8-16 overall record. Southeast had a team regional qualifying score of 192.330.
 
Looking Ahead
Southeast continues its homestand when they face Illinois-Chicago on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. at Houck Field House. The Redhawks then travel to Shreveport, Louisiana on Friday, Feb. 23 for a dual with Centenary. SEMO concludes the weekend with a quad meet at Texas Woman's in Denton, Texas with Centenary and Bridgeport.
