Southeast Missouri baseball (17-14, 8-7) returns to Capaha Field for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series with Jacksonville State (17-12, 6-6) this weekend. Due to the Easter holiday, the series between the OVC co-preseason favorites will begin Thursday and run through Saturday. First pitch Thursday and Friday will be at 6 p.m. with the finale beginning at 2 p.m.

Series History
Since Jacksonville State joined the OVC in 2004, the Redhawks have gone 24-25 against the Gamecocks. The two teams met six times a season ago. The Redhawks came back to win games two and three in Jacksonville to earn the series win in the regular season. The teams squared off again semifinal round with JSU coming out on top, 11-7, and knocking SEMO into the losers bracket. They faced off again the next day in the championship round. SEMO won the game, 10-7, to force the winner-take-all game. Southeast prevailed in the end, downing the Gamecocks 14-8 and punching its ticket to the NCAA Tournament. Southeast has won eight of the last 10 meetings with Jacksonville State including earning a sweep at Capaha in 2015.

A Peek at What's Ahead
Saint Louis University comes to town to open the annual home-and-home series Tuesday, Apr. 18. That game will begin under the lights at 6 p.m. Southeast will take to the road once again for a three-game conference series at Murray State Apr. 21-23.Â

Scouting the Gamecocks
Jacksonville State comes to Cape sporting a 17-12 overall record and an even 6-6 OVC clip. Most recently, JSU dethroned the undefeated Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech by winning two games of the weekend series at home. JSU was swept by Austin Peay to open OVC play and have followed with series wins over Eastern Illinois and Murray State. Offensively, JSU ranks towards the bottom of the conference with a .270 team batting average, third with a 5.02 ERA, and eighth with a .963 fielding percentage. Joe McGuire is 5-0 on the mound with a 2.60 ERA. He has worked 34.2 innings, striking out 32 and walking only eight and holding batters to a .171 average. In 43 innings and eight starts, Derrick Adams has struck out 47 batters. Offensively, Trent Simpson powers the offense, hitting a team-high .308 with seven home runs, 11 doubles, and 34 RBI. Simpson has also made eight relief appearances on the mound.Â

Senior RHP
Clay Chandler earned his team-leading sixth victory at Eastern Illinois Friday. The Second Team All-OVC performer from a season ago finished 4-5 in 2016. His six wins is tied for the league lead with Michael Wood from Tennessee Tech and is tied for third nationally, one win behind co-leaders Jake Thompson (Oregon St.) and David Peterson (Oregon) with seven wins each. Chandler leads the OVC with a 2.53 ERA and 51.1 innings pitched.Â

A Red Hot Hitting Holst
After hitting .571 at Eastern Illinois over the weekend, outfielder
Dan Holst raised his batting average to .421 on the season, good enough to lead the OVC and rank seventh in the country. The senior saw his hitting streak snapped at 12 games last week but recorded multiple hits in all three games at EIU including a pair of three-hit games. He leads the team with 17 multi-hit games this season. His 51 hits ranks 24th while his 1.65 hits per game ranks 11th in the country.Â

There's No Place Like Home
In 14 games at Capaha Field this season, Southeast is 11-3 including a 5-1 OVC clip. The Redhawks are hitting .316 at Capaha and holding opponents to a .244 average while outscoring them, 123-62. Individually,
Dan Holst is hitting .490 while
Tristen Gagan has hit six homers and driven in 24 runs.Â
