Southeast Missouri (10-4) will host the 2017 Leon Smith Classic at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama. The four-day event includes 11 teams and runs from Mar. 9-12.
Lots of Softball Ahead
A total of 25 games in four days are scheduled across three fields at Choccolocco Park, the site of this year's Ohio Valley Conference Softball Championship. Participating teams include Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Belmont, Eastern Illinois, Jacksonville State, Loyola-Chicago, Missouri State, Samford, Southeast Missouri, Tennessee State and Valparaiso. The Redhawks have already played Tennessee State and Missouri State this season and fashion a 2-0 record against those teams.
Road to 50
Mark Redburn is five wins away from reaching 50 at Southeast Missouri. Redburn, who is off to his best start in three years as the Redhawks head coach, is 45-64 overall.
Tournament Play
This week marks Southeast's fourth tournament of the season. The Redhawks enter the Leon Smith Classic with an overall tournament record of 8-4. Southeast won its season-opening Jackson State Tournament with a 3-0 record, went 3-2 at the Lion Classic II in Hammond, Louisiana and recorded a 2-2 mark at the "We Back Pat" Tournament in Kansas City, Mo.
Spring Break Up Next
After playing four games in Oxford, Alabama this week, Southeast remains on the road for its spring break. The Redhawks head to Georgia Tech (Mar. 14), Kennesaw State (Mar. 15) and the Rock Chalk Challenge in Lawrence, Kansas (Mar. 17-19). Southeast then opens Ohio Valley Conference play with doubleheaders at Tennessee Tech (Mar. 25) and Jacksonville State (Mar. 26).
Strong Start
At the time, Southeast became the fifth team in the Ohio Valley Conference to get 10 wins this season when it beat Missouri State and UMKC on Mar. 4. Currently, seven teams in the OVC have 10 or more wins this year. The Redhawks 10-4 start is their best since 1996. Southeast went undefeated in their first 32 games of that season and finished the year with an overall record of 39-9 and 22-2 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Southeast won the OVC regular-season and tournament titles that season.
Krumrey Reaches 200 Strikeouts
Southeast ace pitcher
Madeline Krumrey reached 200 strikeouts in her career at the "We Back Pat" Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri last weekend. Krumrey is 5-2 with a 1.91 ERA, three complete games and a pair of complete game shutouts in eight appearances and six starts this year. She leads the team with 24 strikeouts and presently has 204 in her career.
OVC Top 12
