Fourth Quarter Gets Away from Redhawks in 84-74 Loss to Govs

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri women's basketball (9-13, 3-6) trailed Austin Peay (11-11, 5-4) by only two points going to the fourth quarter Saturday but a 27-point final frame by the Govs was too much for the Redhawks to handle in the end, 84-74.
 
The Redhawks were once again led in scoring by senior Bri Mitchell. Her 15 points extends her double-digit point streak to three games. It was her team-leading 17th double-digit point game this season and 50th of her career.
 
Adrianna Murphy finished the game recording her second-straight double-double. The sophomore had 13 points and dished out 10 assists, her third double-digit assist game this season. She also had six rebounds in the contest.
 
Ashton Luttrull also reached double-figure scoring on Saturday, finishing with 13 points. Her 13 points comes on the heels of 13 points against Murray State on Wednesday. Luttrull and Murphy co-led the team with six rebounds each.
 
Southeast was narrowly outshot in the game, 43.9 percent to 44.4. Southeast nailed eight 3-point baskets in the contest and shot 36 percent from beyond the arc.
 
It was a close game throughout the contest as the score was tied only twice but the lead changed hands six times.
 
The Redhawks began the first quarter hot, making five consecutive shots to open a very early 12-4 lead on the Govs. After making their first five shots, the Redhawks' shooting went 0-for-12 to end the quarter over a 7:33 period. Southeast's final four points in the opening stanza came on free-throws. Austin Peay cut the lead but SEMO's hot start kept the Redhawks in the game. At the end of the first quarter, the Redhawks narrowly trailed 17-16.
 
The Govs found an early five-point lead to begin the second quarter. Nearly three minutes in, Mitchell single-handedly went on a n 8-2 run to recapture a lead for the Redhawks, 24-23. After Sydney Gooch converted a three-point play, the Redhawks went on a 10-3 run to go back up by a handful, 34-29, with 48 seconds to play. The first half ended with the Redhawks up by three, 34-31.
 
Mitchell led the way for the Redhawks with 13 first-half points, eight of which came in the second quarter. At half, all 10 of the Redhawks who had played were in the scoring column. Murphy co-led the team with Luttrull with four rebounds while also leading in assists with four.
 
Southeast shot 37.5 percent in the first half while Austin Peay shot 35.3 percent from the field.
 
The Redhawks went down by five early in the third quarter but quickly worked to narrow the lead and stick with the Govs. The quarter ended on a last-second put back from Mandy Madden to make it a two-point game going to the fourth quarter.
 
Luttrull registered 10 points in the third quarter to reach double-digit points for the sixth time this season.
 
The Govs used a 27-19 final quarter to continually build a lead on the Redhawks. Down 11 with 1:15 to play, Murphy and Lakyn Gulley hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the Gov lead to six but Austin Peay quickly responded to widen the lead back to 12 with 22 seconds left. Deja Jones scored a layup for the final basket, 84-74 Govs.
 
Terarra Banks put up a game-high 24 points for Austin Peay with eight rebounds. Beth Rates contributed 14 points while Sydney Gooch had 11 off the bench.
 
Southeast Missouri is back in action on Wednesday at Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks will hold their Education Day which is set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
