Redhawks Drop 4-3 Heartbreaker to IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Southeast Missouri (1-7) fell to IUPUI (5-10), 4-3, in a close match Saturday evening.
Southeast started strong by claiming the point in doubles play with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Mariya Kostiuk and Anais Emelie teamed up to defeat Samantha Mayer and Sara Sherif, 6-1. Viviana Ortiz and Emilia Montenegro posted a 6-2 victory over Mariella Pessina and Bobbi Modesto. Mila Majtan and Ana Canahuate-Torres played well in their match, but fell, 6-4.
In singles action, the Redhawks came away with victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Kostiuk upended Rachel Swartwood, 6-0, 6-2, at the top of the lineup. Majtan, who moved to the No. 2 position, beat Sherif in three sets, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4. Three of the final four matches were also decided in three sets, and the Jaguars won in each of the final four positions. Annisa Warasanti (No. 3) lost to Mayer, 6-4, 6-4. Montenegro, playing in just her second singles match of the season, dropped a close match, 6-4, 2-6, 5-7, at No. 4. Canahuate-Torres (No. 5) and Ortiz (No. 6) each lost their matches in the third set to round out singles play.
Southeast returns to action at Evansville Sunday.
