Redhawks Sweep Golden Lions with 8-2 Victory

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Southeast Missouri baseball (4-3) extended its winning streak to four and completed a three-game sweep of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-7) Sunday with an 8-2 victory.
For the second day in a row, the Redhawks used timely two-out hitting to down the Golden Lions as half their runs came with two-out.
Robert Beltran (1-1) earned his first win in a Redhawk uniform Sunday. Beltran pitched five and a third innings, allowing two runs on seven hits en route to the win.
Justin Murphy entered the game with two on and two out in the sixth but worked out of the jam. Murphy pitched the final three and two-thirds innings, earning the Redhawks' first save of the season.
Daniel Costello finished with two hits and three RBI while Dan Holst went 1-for-3 with three runs knocked in.
For the fourth game in a row, the Redhawks touched home first. Southeast jumped on Golden Lion starter Ashton Holdridge (0-1) hard and early. A leadoff walk to Trevor Ezell, a base hit by Branden Boggetto, and a walk to Garrett Gandolfo loaded the bases to start the game. Ezell scored on a sac fly to center by Ryan Rippee. A walk to Brian Lees reloaded the bases with two out. The Golden Lions went to the pen following the walk to Lees. Costello poked a two-out base hit up the middle to plate Boggetto and Gandolfo, putting Southeast up 3-0 in the first.
With bases loaded and two out in the fifth inning, Holst plated a pair of runs in the Redhawks' favor to expand to 5-0.
Costello led off the sixth inning with Southeast Missouri's first home run of the season over the right field wall, extending the lead to 6-0.
The Golden Lions put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Redhawk lead to 6-2.
Ezell led off the ninth with a walk and Boggetto was hit by a pitch. Rippee drew a one-out walk to load the bases. UAPB went to the pen and brought in Austin Softley to face Holst. Holst's jersey was just grazed to drive in Ezell. A wild pitch followed, allowing Boggetto to score and bringing the Redhawk lead to 8-2.
Boggetto finished with three hits in the game, all of which came in his first three at bats. Boggetto and Ezell each scored three runs in the contest.
Southeast Missouri will travel to Carbondale, Illinois on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. game against regional rival Southern Illinois. Jacob Lawrence (0-0) will make his first start of the season against the Salukis.
