CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri (9-5, 3-0) came from behind to beat Morehead State (5-9, 2-1), 4-3, in dramatic fashion Saturday afternoon at the Redhawks Tennis Complex.
Southeast won its fifth-straight match and remained unbeaten in Ohio Valley Conference play. The Redhawks also handed the Eagles their first conference loss this season.
"This was the best team match I have seen us play," said Southeast head coach Leah Hottois. "I am very proud of everyone and how they competed."
Southeast trailed, 3-0, before pulling off its remarkable come-from-behind win. Valeriia Nagovitcina and Heather Robinson each won thrilling three-set bouts in singles play. Nagovitcina edged Andrea LaBlanc, 1-6, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 2 and Robinson got by Alex Tachovsky, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4, at No. 4. Annisa Warasanti and Melissa Martin gave the Redhawks two more wins at the bottom of the lineup. Warasanti downed, Sandrine Beaule, 7-5, 6-3, and Martin won her team-high sixth match in a row with a close 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 victory.
Southeast's strong singles stand was the difference as MSU ended up claiming the doubles point with 8-5 victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.
The red-hot Redhawks have won eight of their last 11 matches. Southeast hosts Eastern Kentucky at 10 a.m., CT, Sunday. The Redhawks and Colonels are both undefeated in league play.
