PDF ResultsCAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri gymnastics team was looking for a bounce-back meet and that is exactly what it got on Sunday afternoon at Houck Field House.
The Redhawks claimed the three-team meet with a season-best score of 194.075. The University of Illinois-Chicago finished second with a 193.475 while Alaska scored a 190.325.
"We had a tough meet Friday (at Missouri)," Southeast head coach
Kristi Ewasko said. "The athletes rededicated and recommitted themselves and I think it really showed."
Southeast set nine personal records and scored the second-highest total on the vault as a team in school history.
The Redhawks scored a 48.975, which ranks behind only a 49.000 set on Feb. 18, 1995, as the highest score in school history on the vault.
Megan Fosnow and
Ashley Thomas led the lineup with a 9.825, which was second place on the event.
Thomas joined fellow freshman
Bailey Walker with personal bests as Walker secured a 9.800.
Taryn Vanderpool also was given a 9.800.
Chelsi Hamilton scored a 9.725.
Kimberly Randall of UIC claimed the event title with a 9.875.
Moving into the second rotation, the Redhawks scored a 48.900 on the uneven bars. After Catherine Dion of UIC claimed the event with a 9.850, Southeast followed with the next four finishers.
Fosnow again led the Redhawks with a 9.825 while Vanderpool scored a 9.800.
Lauren Israel scored a personal-best with a 9.775.
Taylor Penzien tied a personal-best with the same score.
Alyssa Tucker's routine gave her a 9.725 while
Alexandria Stokes received a 9.700.
Midway through the meet the Redhawks had a score of 145.150.
Moving onto the balance beam, which has been a steady improvement throughout the season, continued to see that improvement through freshmen.
"We changed the lineup and had more freshmen in it," Ewasko said. "I think some of the nerves showed but overall the freshmen stepped up and did their job."
Tucker, one of the freshmen Ewasko was talking about, scored a personal best 9.775 on the last routine for the Redhawks.
"Tucker had a beautiful beam routine anchoring our lineup," Ewasko said. "After a few wobbles, we needed to go for the biggest score possible and she gave us that opportunity."
Southeast scored a 47.275 as a team on the event while Dion claimed her second event title of the day with a 9.850.
The final rotation placed Southeast on the floor, where it once again shined with a 48.925.
Bailey Walker won the event with a personal-best 9.875. It is her first event win on the year for the freshman.
Taryn Vanderpool tied a personal-best with a 9.850 to place third while Thomas scored a career-best with a 9.800. Tucker scored her second personal-best of the day with a 9.750.
With her two event victories, Dion claimed the all-around title with a 39.375. Tucker scored a personal-best with a 38.900 while Vanderpool had a 38.575.
With the bounce back, Ewasko was happy with the way the meet went adding, "They really shined today and it showed they do want to fight. They really want to do what it takes to get to the regional."
The Redhawks stay at home for a Valentine's Day dual with Ball State on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
