EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team stole 10 bases on their way to a 8-4 win over SIUE Saturday afternoon in Edwardsville, Ill.  The 10 stolen bases was the most in the Ohio Valley Conference since Austin Peay recorded 11 against Western Kentucky on April 6, 2006.

“Our guys did a very good job on the bases and taking advantage of the situation they were put in," said head coach Steve Bieser.

The Redhawks and Cougars combined for 25 hits in the contest as Southeast recorded 14 hits as they improved to 16-16 overall and 8-6 in the OVC. SIUE drops to 8-17 and 6-8 in the conference with the loss.

Clayton Evans led the Redhawks going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. He also recorded three stolen bases on the day. Evans' three stolen bases was the most by a Redhawk player since Tony Spencer did it against Alabama on February 21, 2009.

“The top half of the lineup and the bottom half of the lineup was terrific, for us today” Said Bieser.

The Redhawks got on the board first with a pair of runs in the third inning. Southeast opened the scoring with an RBI double from Derek Gibson scoring Cole Bieser as he reached third on a walk and stolen base and an error.

Southeast added another run in the frame on an RBI single through the right side by Ryan Barnes as Gibson scored on the play.

SIUE took their first lead of the contest with four runs in the bottom of the fourth frame. The Cougars batted around in the inning with five hits. Joel Greatting gave SIUE the lead with a two-run bases loaded single up the middle.

Southeast tied the game in the top of the sixth inning as Bieser drove in Evans on an RBI double down the right field line. Evans got into scoring position after his third stolen base of the contest.

“We had five two out RBI and we will win a lot of games that way,” said Bieser.

The Redhawks added to their lead in the eighth and ninth innings with a run in each frame. Gibson added an RBI double in the eighth inning as Alex Burridge added an RBI single to right field in the top of the ninth to give the Redhawks an 8-4 lead.
The Southeast bullpen closed the door on the Cougars as Luke Shearrow (2-2), Tony Zerrusen and Bobby Hurst combined for 5.2 innings of scoreless relief of starter Trevor Kill.

Five Redhawks recorded multi hit games as Evans, Bieser, Gibson, Burridge and Jason Blum each added two or more hits. Bieser and Gibson each added a pair of RBI and runs scored.

Jake Stuaffenberg (2-2) was tagged with the loss for SIUE allowing three runs in three innings of relief work.

The SIUE offense was led by Drew Johnson and Ryan Mansfield and James Vasquez as they each added a pair of hits.

The Redhawks and Cougars will wrap up their series tomorrow with a 12:00 p.m. start as game time has changed due to the threat of rain in the area on Sunday.
