JACKSON, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri (23-34) pitcher
Shae Simmons tossed a career-high eight plus innings in a 4-3 win over Austin Peay (34-22) Thursday evening at Pringles Park in Jackson, Tenn. It is the Redhawks sixth straight win over the Govs in OVC Tournament play.
“Brilliant pitching by both teams today” said head coach Mark Hogan. “It was a big time pitchers dual.”
Simmons finished the contest going eight plus innings with five strikeouts. He gave up two runs on six hits as he improved to 7-0 this season against OVC opponents.
The Govs got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth inning after Simmons was perfect through the first time through the Austin Peay batting order. Greg Bachman, the OVC RBI leader drove in the opening run to make it 3-1.
The Redhawks got on the board in the fifth inning on a solo home run from
Kenton Parmley as he hit his 12
th home run of the season to left field to tie the contest at 1-1.
The Redhawks took the lead in the top of the eighth inning with three runs.
Jason Blum broke the tie game with a single through the right side scoring
Kody Campbell after a play at the plate to make it 2-1 Redhawks.
Senior
Taylor Heon scored on a wild pitch and
Trenton Moses drove in a run on an RBI single up the middle to expand the lead to 4-1.
The Govs battled back in the bottom of the ninth inning with two runs. Senior
Ryan Prickett relieved Simmons. Austin Peay's P.J. Torres then plated a run to cut the lead to 4-3.
APSU loaded the bases with Bachman at the plate with two outs, but Prickett got the best of the third baseman striking him out with a curveball to give the Redhawks a 4-3 win.
“He stuttered a little bit, but then he found some composure,” said Hogan.
Campbell added three hits for the second straight contest going 3-for-5 with a run scored.
Moses added a pair of hits and he extended his reaching base safely streak to 77-games.
Bachman added a pair of hits to pace the Govs offense.
Zane Leffew (2-2) picked up the loss going a third of an inning allowing two runs. Starter Zach Toney threw seven innings allowing one run on five this.
Southeast advances to face Eastern Illinois Friday. First pitch is set for 7 p.m., CT, at Pringles Park.
