CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. – Southeast Missouri junior pitcher
Shae Simmons threw six innings with six strikeouts in the Redhawks 7-1 win over Murray State Friday evening at Capaha Field in a Key Ohio Valley Conference victory.
The Redhawks improve to 18-32 overall and 9-13 in the OVC.
“We played outstanding defensively tonight,” said head coach Mark Hogan. “Trenton and Taylor made some impressive plays that set the tone for us.”
Murray State (21-29, 7-15 OVC) left 16 runners on base as they left the bases loaded three times. The Redhawks and Thoroughbreds each added eight hits on the night.
The Redhawks opened up the scoring in the second inning with a trio of runs. Freshman
Ryan Barnes drove a two-run double off the centerfield fence driving in
Derek Gibson and
Kody Campbell.
Jesse Tierney expanded the lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice to fly to centerfield.
Campbell expanded the lead to 4-0 in the third frame with an RBI double to left centerfield scoring
Trenton Moses, who also reached on a double that hit the top of the centerfield fence.
Murray State added their lone run in the contest in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Mike Kozlowski.
The Redhawks added a run in the seventh inning on another RBI double this time down the left field line from
Jason Blum as
Kenton Parmley scored to make it 5-1 Southeast.
Southeast closed out the scoring in the eighth inning with a pair of runs. Tierney added his second sacrfice fly of the game and
Cole Bieser added an RBI single as the Redhawks took the contest, 7-1.
Simmons (5-4) was outstanding as he went six innings with six strikeouts. He is now 5-1 in OVC contests. He allowed eight hits and only run.
“Shae competed and pitched out of some big situations tonight,” said Hogan.
Christian Hull earned his third save of the season throwing the final three innings allowing only one hit with two strikeouts. The O'Fallon, Mo. native got out of two bases loaded jams in the seventh and eighth innings.
Campbell led the Redhawks offensively going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. He also added a walk in the contest. Campbell has recorded an RBI in five of his last seven contests.
Mose extended his hitting streak to 18-games tying his season-high. He extended his reaching base safely streak to 70-games with a double and two walks.
Tyler Beers (3-6) picked up the loss going five innings allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits.
Brandon Eggenschwiler was the only Murray State player to record a multi-hit night going 2-for-5.
