CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri (14-23, 7-11) and Jacksonville State (19-21, 13-6) split a doubleheader Friday afternoon at the Southeast Softball Complex. The Redhawks won game one, 3-1, and the Gamecocks took the nightcap, 9-8.
Southeast Missouri 3, Jacksonville State 1
Southeast scored in each of its final three at-bats en route to its game one victory.
The game was scoreless through three-and-a-half innings before the Redhawks executed a double steal to break the drought with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.
Evan Sallis stole second and pinch-runner
Leah Becker was ruled safe at home, giving Southeast a 1-0 advantage.
Southeast added another two-out run in the fifth when
Taylor Cowan delivered a single up the middle to score
Cheyenne Gipson, pushing the Redhawks lead to 2-0.
JSU posed its biggest threat in the top of the sixth. Krystal Ruth reached on an error and scored on Kaycee Crow's ensuing double down the left field line to cut Southeast's lead in half. The Gamecocks later stranded two baserunners in the same inning.
Xia Wilson's leadoff home run cleared the wall in right center to extend Southeast's lead to 3-0 during its at-bat in the sixth. The home run was the second of the season for Wilson.
JSU had one more runner in scoring position in the seventh, but Tyris Branford was stranded on second when Savannah Sloan hit into a game-ending double play.
Alora Marble (8-10) allowed six hits and one run in seven strong innings, tossing her 13th complete game of the season. Marble also struck out two and walked two, while facing 29 hitters.
Tiffany Harbin (9-5) suffered the loss. Harbin gave up six hits and three runs, while striking out six in six innings of work.
Wilson went 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI to lead Southeast at the plate.
Jacksonville State 9, Southeast Missouri 8
Jacksonville State scored eight of its nine tallies off four home runs and survived a ferocious seventh-inning Southeast Missouri rally to win, 9-8, in game two.
JSU built a 9-3 lead with the help of a three-run homer by Sara Borders in the second inning, a two-run home run by Shelby Holley in the third and solo home runs by Borders in the fifth and Kristin Graham in the sixth.
Southeast then came alive in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five runs on four hits and an error to pull within a run.
Kaitlin Wallace led off with a single up the middle and
Simone Patterson walked. Pinch-hitter
Brittany Smith knocked in both Wallace and Patterson on a single to left.
Lindsey Patterson followed with a walk. Cowan then greeted JSU relief pitcher Tiffany Harbin with a single. Another base hit, this time by
Renee Kertz, scored Smith. Cowan and Patterson each scored unearned runs to cut JSU's lead to 9-8 before Wallace struck out looking to end the game.
Sam Snow (7-5) earned the win after allowing seven runs on six hits in 6.1 innings. Snow struck out three and walked four, as well. Harbin struck out two, while giving up a run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning to nail down her second save of the season.
Shea Cothren (3-9) suffered the loss for Southeast. Cothren allowed four hits and five runs, while walking six and striking out one in two innings.
Southeast outhit JSU, 9-8, with Patterson, Kertz and Wallace contributing two hits apiece. Kertz also added a team-high three RBI.
Borders went 2-for-3 with two home runs, two runs scored and five RBI to lead JSU.
The Redhawks and Gamecocks wrap up their three-game series at 1 p.m., CT, Saturday.
