CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team dropped a 10-9 back-and-forth affair against Mid-Continent University Tuesday afternoon at Capaha Field.
The Cougars plated the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning off of Redhawk reliever Zack Smith, as the Cougars have now won five of six games.
The Redhawks dropped to 8-22 overall and the Cougars improved to 15-27 on the season.
“They swung the bats very well,” said head coach Mark Hogan.
The Redhawks pounded out 11 hits in the contest, but the Cougars managed to scatter 15 hits on the afternoon.
Southeast jumped out to an early 4-1 lead after two innings. Kenton Parmley (37-game hitting streak) and Trenton Moses (50-game reaching base safely streak) both extended their school record streaks in the frame, as Moses plated Parmley with an RBI double down the left field line to highlight the Redhawks fast start.
Mid-Continent added three runs in the third to make it a 6-4 contest as Richard Arias hit a three-run shot to left center field.
The Cougars took the lead with two runs in the fifth inning, but Southeast would tie only to see Mid-Continent take a 9-7 lead in the top of the sixth inning.
The Redhawks battled back to tie the game at 9-9 with a two-run home run down the left field line by Derek Gibson. Gibson extended his hitting streak to 14-games.
Neither team could garner any offense in the seventh and eighth innings, but the Cougars Cable McGinn drove in Spencer Anderson on a sacrifice fly in the ninth. That play was the game-winner as Mid-Continent pulled off the 10-9 victory.

Smith (1-5) was credited with the loss. He allowed three hits and one run in three innings.
