Late Inning Home Run Lifts Skyhawks Past Southeast, 5-4

Derek Gibson tied a school record with three doubles on the night

MARTIN, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri sophomore Derek Gibson tied a school record with three doubles in the Redhawks 5-4 loss to UT Martin Friday evening in Martin, Tenn. Freshman Jake Deason hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Skyhawks the victory.

Gibson finished his career day going 4-for-5 (career-high) extending his hitting streak to 27-games. He tied a school record that has been matched ten times, last by Brett Russell on May 5, 2010 against Mid-Continent.

"Derek has done a good job for us all season," said head coach Mark Hogan.

The Redhawks (14-29, 5-11 OVC) opened up the scoring in the top of the third inning as Andy Lennington made an instant impact in his return driving in Gibson to give the Redhawks a 1-0 lead.

The Skyhawks (11-30, 5-11 OVC) added four runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 advantage. A two-run triple by Matt Young and two-run double by Jordan Owen highlighted the inning.

Southeast added a run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 4-2. Gibson reached on his second double and scored on an error by the shortstop.

The Redhawks tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth inning on Gibson's third double of the contest to left centerfield as Taylor Heon and Kenton Parmley scored.

Deason gave the Skyhawks the lead at 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning with his first career home run to left field as UT Martin took the series opener, 5-4.

Reliever Dan Tobik closed the door on Southeast throwing the final 3.1 innings with six strikeouts, as he did not allow a hit as he earned his third win of the season.

Christian Hull (3-7) was tagged with the loss going 3.2 innings allowing two hits with seven strikeouts. Starter Shae Simmons threw 4.1 innings.

Trenton Moses added a hit in the contest as he has reached base safely in 63-games.

The Redhawks and Skyhawks meet again tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m., CT. Zack Smith will get the start for Southeast.
