CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team fell short in a comeback bid against Preseason Ohio Valley Conference favorite Austin Peay Friday evening at Capaha Field as the Redhawks fell 8-5.
Austin Peay snapped the Redhawks five game winning streak in OVC openers. Southeast falls to 7-16 overall and 0-1 in the OVC. The Govs improve to 12-10 and 1-0 in the conference.
“We gave a great effort tonight against a tough club” said head coach Mark Hogan.
The Redhawks got on the board first plating a run in the second inning off of Govs starter Ryan Quick. Sophomore

Cole Bieser on an RBI double to left center field to go up 1-0.
The Governors added five runs in the third inning and two in the top of the sixth to jump out to a 7-1 lead. A two-run homer from P.J. Torres highlighted the outburst.
Senior
Trenton Moses blasted his tenth home run of the season in bottom of the sixth inning snapping Quick's streak of 10 straight batters retired to make it a 7-2 game.
After the Governors added a run in the top of the seventh inning the Redhawks added three runs in the in the bottom of the frame.
Southeast fought the weather in the stanza as a 23-minute rain delay tested the Redhawk bats.
Freshman
Ryan Barnes opened the scoring with an RBI double to right centerfield scoring
John Logan Zink.
Dalton Hewitt would pinch run for Barnes and later scored on an RBI single off the bat of Parmley.
The Redhawks added their third run of the frame on an RBI bouncer to second base of the stick of
Kody Campbell as the Redhawks cut the deficit to 8-5.
Southeast battled back in the bottom of the ninth inning loading the bases against Govs closer Tyler Rogers. But the submariner got out of the jam as APSU took the conference opener 8-5.
Parmley extended his hitting streak to 30 games with a single in the first inning as he finished the day 3-for-5 with an RBI. He has also reached base safely in 38 contest.
Andy Lennington also went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double.
Moses was 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk. He extended his hitting streak to 14 games and his reaching base safely streak to 43 straight games.
Lefty
Christian Hull (2-3) picked up the loss going six innings allowing seven earned runs on seven hits.
Tony Zerrusen was solid out of the Southeast bullpen throwing three innings allowing an earned run.
“Tony was very impressive,” said Hogan. “He just went out there and mowed them down.”
Ryan Quick (2-0) earned the win going six innings allowing three earned runs on six hits. Rogers earned his fourth save throwing the final three innings.
The two teams will go at it again tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m., CT. at Capaha Field.
Shae Simmons (0-3, 5.32 ERA) opposes lefthander Zach Toney (1-2, 4.85 ERA).
