Dayton, Ohio – The Southeast Missouri baseball team dropped a 2-0 pitcher's duel Saturday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium in Dayton, Ohio. Southeast starter
Shae Simmons threw a career-high seven innings with three strikeouts. Wright State starter Cody Kopilchack threw six innings with eight strikeouts leading the way for the Raiders in the victory.
“I was really proud of the way we performed, Wright State was very good today, it was just a great collegiate baseball game,” said head coach Mark Hogan.
WSU outhit the Redhawks 9-2 in the contest, as Southeast faced All-American closer Michael Schum in the final three innings. The loss drops the Redhawks to 6-9 overall and the win improves the Raider's record to 5-7 on the season.
Southeast threatened to score the first runs of the game for the second straight contest in the top of the first inning. Senior
Kenton Parmley extended his reaching base safely streak (31 games) with a walk and Moses followed with a single, extending his streak of reaching base safely to 36 games, but Kopilchack struckout two straight ending the Redhawks' threat for an early lead.
The Raiders got on the board first putting the games opening run on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Wright State catcher Cory Davis drove in the run on a single to left field, scoring Kyle Mossbarger, who reached on an walk.
The Redhawks threatened to tie the contest in the fourth inning, with
Kody Campbell and
Taylor Heon reaching base on a pair of walks, but Kopilchack got out of the jam striking out
John Logan Zink to end the Redhawks threat.
Wright State added another run extending their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Designated hitter Kody Krizman drove in Mossbarger with a double to right centerfield as Mossbarger reached base on walk.
The Redhawks could not break through on closer Schum in the final three innings as the Raiders took the contest 2-0. It is the first time the Redhawks have been shutout since May 3, 2011, when Arkansas defeated Southeast 10-0.
Simmons (0-2) was tagged with the loss throwing a career-high seven innings allowing two earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
Cody Spanberger threw a scoreless eighth inning for the second straight day out of the Redhawk bullpen.
“Shae couldn't throw much better, he had several efficient innings, he was impressive for us today,” said Hogan.
Moses and Parmley extended their streaks in the contest recording the Redhawks hits on the afternoon. Parmley extended his hitting streak to 22 games and his reaching base safely streak to 31 games.
Kopilchack (1-2) picked up the win for the Raiders, recording eight striekouts. Schulm threw the final three innings with six knockouts earning his second save of the season.
The Redhawks and Raiders will wrap up their three game set on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m., CT.
