CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team defeated Hannibal-LaGrange 13-6 Tuesday afternoon at Capaha Field in Cape Girardeau, Mo. The Redhawks (4-4) pounded out 16 hits in the contest, scoring five runs in the first inning on their way to the victory. Freshman Ryan Barnes was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI to lead Southeast.
“We have continued to swing the bat well, the new guys are hitting well and you always know what you will get from our returners” said head coach Mark Hogan.
The Trojans (0-1) got on the board in the first inning taking an early 1-0 advantage. Centerfielder Josh Pierce opened the contest with a double to left centerfield. Pierce later scored on a groundout.
Southeast responded in the bottom of the first with five runs. Seniors Kenton Parmley and Trenton Moses each extended their hitting streaks with a pair of singles. After a Kody Campbell walk, Andy Lennington hit a two-run single through the left side to give the Redhawks the 2-1 lead.
True freshman Ryan Barnes followed Lennington with a two-run single of his own to right field, he would later advance to third on a fielding error by the right fielder. Derek Gibson closed the inning with an RBI single scoring Barnes to give the Redhawks a 5-1 lead after one inning.
The Trojans plated four runs in the fourth inning tying the game at 5-5. The inning featured only two hits. The Redhawks got out of a bases loaded jam in the inning as senior Ryan Prickett got Clint Hamilton to fly out to right field.
Barnes opened the fifth inning with an opposite field blast to left center to give the Redhawks a 6-5 lead. It is Barnes' second home run of the season after homering in his first at-bat as a Redhawk at Dallas Baptist.
“It was a pitch away and I just tried to drive it, I didn't think it was going to go out, but it just kept carrying,” Barnes said.
The Redhawks added a run in the seventh inning and then six runs in the eighth inning. The six run eighth was highlighted by two hits and two timely errors by the Trojans.
The Redhawks had three walks and a hit batsman in the wighth frame. Moses delivered his third double of the year to score a Redhawk Run. Campbell would also add a RBI single to highlight the frame as Southeast jumped out to 13-5 lead.
The Trojans added a run in the ninth inning, but Southeast junior Trevor Kill stayed strong and earned his first save at Southeast as the Redhawks took the first game of the two game set against Hannibal-LaGrange, 13-6.
Barnes was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored including his solo home run.
“I was thrilled by the level of Ryan's play today,” said head coach Mark Hogan.
Moses was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, he extended his hitting streak to 19 games and his reaching base safely streak to 29 games.
Parmley extended his hitting streak to 16 games dating back to last season as the senior went 3-for-6 with a run scored.
Sophomore outfielder Derek Gibson added a pair of hits with an RBI and John Logan Zink added a hit and a pair of walks.
Michael Patman got the nod on the hill for Southeast going 3.2 innings allowing five runs on three hits. Prickett (1-0) earned the win for Southeast throwing 3.1 innings of relief allowing only two hits with five strikeouts, tying a career-high.
Cathcher Ian Sikes led the Trojans going 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Hannibal-LaGrange threw eight pitchers in the contest, Ian Hatton was tagged with the loss for the Trojans.
The two will meet again Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., CT. at Capaha Field.
