CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri sophomore John Logan Zink hit an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Redhawks (5-4) defeated Hannibal-LaGrange 6-5 Wednesday afternoon at Capaha Field. Redshirt Freshman Andy Lennington was 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored to pace the Redhawks.
“We won with defense and pitching today it's a very solid way to get a win,” said head coach Mark Hogan.
Relievers Dylan Lynn and Bobby Hurst combined for six strikeouts in the final three frames, as each earned milestones in the victory as Lynn earned his first win and Hurst earned his first save.
“All four of our pitchers threw well today, Lynn and Hurst were very good in the end and made it easy on our defense,” said Hogan.
The Trojan's Josh Pierce led the game off with double for the second straight game, he would later score on a groundout to shortstop as Hannibal-LaGrange took a 1-0 lead in the first inning for the second straight game.
The Redhawks tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning. The Redhawks loaded the bases in the frame as designated hitter Derek Gibson highlighted the inning with a base knock to left field.
Southeast loaded the bases and centerfielder Cole Bieser used a two out walk to score Andy Lennington to tie the game at 1-1.
Hannibal-LaGrange plated three runs in the third inning to jump out to a 4-1 lead. The three run frame was highlighted by a trio of hits.
The Redhawks cut into the Trojan lead in the third inning adding a pair of runs to make it 4-3 Hannibal-LaGrange. Senior's Trenton Moses and Kody Campbell were issued free passes as Moses was hit by a pitch and Campbell reached on a walk.
Lennington scored Moses on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Lennington has recorded an RBI in five of his last six games and nine in his last three games. Campbell later scored on Taylor Heon single through the left side as the Redhawks cut the Trojan lead to one run.
Southeast took a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning, as the Trojans avoided the big inning as the Redhawks left the bases loaded. Southeast recorded two hits in the frame and took advantage of walks and hit by pitches.
Campbell highlighted the stanza with an RBI single through the right side of the infield to tie the game at 4-4. Catcher Ryan Barnes then drew a bases loaded walk to give Southeast a 5-4 advantage
Hannibal-LaGrange tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning. Brandon Bennett drove in Billy Billings on an RBI double to right field after Billings reached base on a leadoff single.
Neither team could add a run in seventh inning as the Trojans left a runner on base in the frame, while Southeast left three runners on base.
The Redhawks would strike in the eighth inning. Lennington opened the inning with a base hit through the left side. He would then advance to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Shane Blair.
Zink, then pinch hit for designated hitter Derek Gibson and precede to hit what proved to be a game winning RBI double down the left field line scoring Lennington to give the Redhawks a 5-4 lead.
Hurst struck out two in the final frame closing the door on a late Trojan comeback as Southeast took the game 6-5.
Lennington led the Redhawks going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Kenton Parmley, who made a highlight reel play at shortstop extended his hitting streak to 17 games going 2-for-5.
Moses reached base three times with a walk and a pair of hit by pitches, but his hitting streak of 19 games was snapped. Moses added to his reaching base safely streak as it now stands at 30 games. He also moves into the top 10 of active leaders in NCAA in hit by pitches.
Ryan Kendall got the start on the mound going three innings allowing four runs on four hits. Hank Williams, Jr. threw 2.2 innings giving up a run with four strikeouts.
Lynn (1-0) earned the win with Hurst earning the save for Southeast.
