Baseball Drops Pair at #33 Dallas Baptist

Redhawks and Patriots will wrap up their series Saturday

The Redhawks are now 26-27 in 53 season openers
DALLAS, Texas – The Southeast Missouri (0-2) baseball team opened the 2012 season Friday at #33 Dallas Baptist (2-0). The Patriots took the opening two games of the series by scores of 7-6 and 3-2. The Redhawks are now 26-27 in 53 season openers. Southeast had 12 newcomers make their Redhawk debuts on Friday

Game 1 - DBU 7 Southeast 6 - Box Score

The Patriots took the series opener by a score of 7-6 as DBU used a run in the bottom of the seventh to pull away from the Redhawks.

Dallas Baptist opened up the scoring in the opening frame as Nebraska transfer Boomer Collins hit the second pitch of the inning over left center field fence off of Hull.

Southeast, who scattered one hit in the first inning, opened the second inning with a walk from Taylor Heon. Freshman Ryan Barnes followed with a two-run blast to right to give the Redhawks a 2-1 in his first at-bat at Southeast.

The Patriots threatened in the second inning with the bases loaded, but Heon made a sliding stop with a throw for his knees to end the Patriots threat.

The Redhawks took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning as redshirt freshman Jason Blum reached on a walk and later scored on a single to left center by senior Kenton Parmley.

DBU plated three runs in the fourth inning, junior Tony Zerrusen relieved Hull in the frame, but got into early trouble walking the first two batters of the inning. The inning was riddled by lapses from the Redhawks as the Patriots managed to score three runs without earning a hit to take a 5-3 lead.

Dallas Baptist added a score in the fifth inning taking a 6-3 lead. Southeast erupted for five hits in the top of the sixth inning adding two runs to cut the Patriots lead to 6-5. Redshirt Freshman Dalton Hewitt, Cole Bieser and Parmley opened the inning with a trio of singles.

Parmley drove in Hewitt for is second RBI of the afternoon. Senior Kody Campbell loaded the bases with a single as Southeast looked to take the lead with one out in the inning. The Redhawks would drive in one more run on a Heon single, but left the bases loaded ending their scoring threat.

Southeast tied the game at 7-7 in the seventh inning, when Bieser scored on a Jesse Tierney single to left field. DBU would take the lead in the bottom of the seventh and would then halt a Redhawk push in the eighth and ninth inning to hold off the Redhawks and take the first game 7-6.

Southeast was led offensively by Barnes, who was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and a run scored in his first game as a Redhawk. Heon was 2-for-3 on the afternoon with a run scored and an RBI. Parmley was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
Junior Bobby Hurst was tagged with the loss for the Redhawks.

The Redhawks and Patriots will meet again in game two of their doubleheader tonight at Patriot Field.


Game 2 - DBU 3 Southeast 2 - Box Score

DALLAS, Texas - In Friday's night cap Southeast Missouri fell 3-2 at Patriot Field in Dallas, Texas. Patriot starter Ty Sneed threw five scoreless innings with five strikeouts to lead Dallas Baptist past the Redhawks.
 
Southeast scattered seven hits in the ball game and the Redhawk pitching staff held the Patriots, a 2011 NCAA Super Regional qualifier to four hits.
 
DBU added runs in the first, third and fifth innings jumping out to a 3-0 lead after five innings.
 
The Redhawks got on the board in the sixth inning adding a pair of runs. Senior Kody Campbell opened the inning with a walk. Preseason OVC Player of the Year Trenton Moses drove in Campbell with a triple to right center.
 
Moses later scored on a groundball to second off the bat of freshman Ryan Barnes to cut the lead to 3-2. But that was not enough as the Redhawks fell 3-2.
 
Moses was 2-for-4 in the second contest with a triple and an RBI and run scored. Redshirt Freshman Jason Blum capped of a great opening day going 2-for-4 as well for Southeast.
 
Southeast starter Shae Simmons (0-1) picked up the loss for the Redhawks throwing four innings, allowing two runs on two hits. Junior Ryan Kendall threw a third of an inning allowing a run.
 
Junior college transfer Dylan Lynn had an impressive opening outing as a Redhawk throwing 3.2 innings allowing only two hits.
 
DBU was led by Austin Elkins, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Landon Anderson was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs.
 
The Redhawks and Patriots will close their season opening series Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Lefthander Zach Smith is expected to start Saturday for Southeast opposing fellow lefthander Taylor Massey.
