Quick Hits
Smith Joins 1,000-Point Club
Junior guard
Marland Smith scored 1,000 points in his career when he pitched in nine at UT Martin Thursday. Smith, who scored his 1,000th point on a layup with 22 seconds left, the final basket of the game. He is the first Redhawk to score 1,000 career points since Derek Winans had 1,505 from 2001-05.
Redhawks in Third
Southeast enters Saturday's game currently in third-place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings. The Redhawks, who are 8-4 in league play, moved to third after Tennessee Tech lost to Eastern Illinois on Feb. 9.
Road Warriors
The Redhawks hit the road for four of their last five games of the regular-season. After Saturday, Southeast returns home to host league-leading Murray State in its final home game on Feb. 15. The Redhawks then go to McNeese State (Feb. 18), Jacksonville State (Feb. 23) and Austin Peay (Feb. 25). Southeast is 3-8 on the road this year.
Niemczyk Returns
Junior guard
Nick Niemczyk returned to the starting lineup against UT Martin (Feb. 9). Niemczyk missed five-straight games due to a concussion he sustained during the team's practice on Jan. 18. He scored six points, grabbed two rebounds, dished out one assist and added a steal in 25 minutes against the Skyhawks.
Series History
The Redhawks lead their all-time series against SIUE, 12-4. Southeast won 11 of its last 13 meetings with the Cougars. The Redhawks are 3-0 against SIUE under head coach
Dickey Nutt. Southeast beat the Cougars, 85-68, in Cape Girardeau on Jan. 12. SIUE is in the final year of its four-year reclassification procss to NCAA Division I. The Cougars, who had been Division II since their beginning in men's basketball during the 1967-68 season, will not be eligible for the NCAA Tournament during the process. Men's soccer and softball are the designated fast-track programs for SIUE. Those two teams are eligible for the NCAA Championships.
Balanced Effort
Ten different Redhawks scored in a balanced effort which sent UT Martin to its 14th-consecutive loss on Feb. 9.
