CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Southeast Missouri Baseball (31-13, 12-6 OVC) fell to SIUE (23-21, 12-6 OVC) with a final score of 9-2 on Sunday afternoon.
SEMO tallied eight hits and two runs, including a home run, but SIUE capitalized with four runs in both the fourth and seventh innings to secure the victory.
The Redhawks took an early lead in the first inning when
Caleb Klein singled to right field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After
Cal Sullivan walked,
Ryan Lopetegui singled to center field, allowing Klein to score. The Redhawks led 1-0 after the first inning.
SIUE responded in the fourth inning. After a single and a hit by pitch, an RBI single by Willoughby brought in the tying run. A wild pitch and a walk loaded the bases, and Fry doubled to left field, clearing the bases and giving the Cougars a 4-1 lead through four innings.
In the fifth inning, SIUE extended its lead with a solo home run by Gierer, making it 5-1. Southeast Missouri had runners in scoring position but could not capitalize, leaving the score at 5-1 after the fifth.
SIUE added four more runs in the seventh inning. A combination of singles and doubles, along with an error, pushed the score to 9-1. The Redhawks were unable to score in their half of the inning, maintaining the score.
In the eighth inning,
Demitri Shakotko homered to right center, adding a run for Southeast Missouri. However, the team could not mount a further comeback, and the inning ended with a score of 9-2.
