Soccer Falls 2-1 on Sunday Afternoon

HOUCK FIELD – Southeast Missouri women's soccer (0-8-1, 0-2-1 OVC) fell on Sunday afternoon to Western Illinois (1-9-0, 1-2-0 OVC) by a final score of 2-1 in Cape Girardeau.
The Redhawks outshot the Leathernecks by a 14-6 advantage, including 10 shots-on-goal, led by Cayla Koerner who finished with eight shots with six of them on target.
Freshman forward Alli Saviano scored her first goal of her collegiate career to get the scoring started in the match. Saviano rebounded a Koerner shot and slotted it past WIU's Ariel Bernard in the 13th minute, to give SEMO a 1-0 lead.
The Leathernecks would respond 15 minutes later as Ali Mathews found herself on the end of a corner kick and rifled it into the left of the Redhawks goal to equalize. The goal made it 1-1 in the 28th minute of the match.
At halftime, SEMO was outshooting WIU by a 5-4 advantage. Goalkeeper Sophia Elfrink recorded two first half saves.
With just over 20-minutes left, WIU earned one-of-their-four corners in the match and this one proved to be the difference as Kayla Turner served the ball into the box found the head of Rita Moran who guided the ball into the top left of the goal to secure the game winner.
Five Redhawks played the entire 90-minutes of the match including goalkeeper Elfrink, Elizabeth Rater, Kristin Anderson, Ella Baldwin, and Cayla Koerner.
Six Redhawks recorded a shot in the match, led by Koerner, as Melissa Kubin, Alli Saviano, Alayna Jakul, Katelyn Miller, and Zoe Houston all had a shot in the contest.
WIU's Ariel Bernard played the full 90-minutes in goal, allowing just the Saviano goal, and made nine saves on the afternoon.
SEMO Soccer will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 3, when they take on Eastern Illinois. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m., CT. in Charleston, Ill.
