Redhawks Go for Outright OVC Title in Regular-Season Finale vs. Eastern Illinois Thursday

Live Results

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Ohio Valley Conference leader Southeast Missouri (14-2, 4-0) plays host to Eastern Illinois (12-9, 3-1) in its regular-season finale Thursday. Start time is 2 p.m., CT at the John C. Bierk Tennis Complex.

With a win Thursday, SEMO can claim this year's OVC regular-season title outright and lock up the No. 1 seed in the league's postseason tournament. This year's OVC Tournament will be held in Paducah, Kentucky from Apr. 21-23.

But before the Redhawks can look to next week, they must get by the Panthers who come to Cape Girardeau tied for second in the league with SIU Edwardsville. EIU recently suffered its only conference loss to the Cougars on Apr. 8. The Panthers have won eight of their last 10 matches.

Meanwhile, SEMO remains red-hot. The Redhawks are on a program record 13-match winning streak and have been nothing short of spectacular along the way. In OVC play alone, SEMO shut out three of its four opponents (Lindenwood, Tennessee State, Southern Indiana) and picked up a big road win over SIU Edwardsville. In all, eight of SEMO's 14 victories this spring are shutouts.

Five of the six players in SEMO's singles lineup are on winning streaks of six or more matches. Teona Velkoska has won 12 in a row and Trinity Calinescu posted wins in each of her previous 10 contests. Vivian Lai is on a nine-match winning streak, while Daniela Hlacikova and Romana Tarajova each won their last six in a row.

Combined, Velkoska (13), Calinescu (11), Lai (11), Hlacikova (14) and Tarajova (12) have 61 of the team's 75 singles victories in dual competition. That equates to 81 percent of SEMO's total win output in singles play.

In doubles action, Hlacikova and Velkoska lead the team with nine wins at the No. 2 position. Calinescu and Lai are undefeated at 8-0 in the No. 3 spot, while Ksenia Shikanova and Tarajova are 8-2 in the lineup's top slot.

One more victory will give SEMO 15 wins in a season for the third-straight year. That has never been done in the history of its program which began in 1991-92.
