HARDIN, Ky. – Southeast Missouri (2-2) handed former Ohio Valley Conference member Murray State (4-1) its first loss of the season when it edged the Racers, 4-3, Sunday at the Kenlake Tennis Center.
SEMO ended MSU's season-opening four-match winning streak and picked up its second victory of the season.
The Redhawks won in four of the six singles spots to take the close match.
Daniela Hlacikova and
Romana Tarajova set the tone at the top of the lineup with victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Both Hlacikova and Tarajova battled back after dropping their first sets to win.
Hlacikova, in her first match playing No. 1 this spring, upended Sarah Bureau, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, while Tarajova took down Emma Honore, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Hlacikova improved her dual singles record to 3-1 thus far.
Ksenia Shikanova beat Annika Pschorr at No. 3, 7-6, 6-4, and
Teona Velkoska scored the decisive point with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Maggie Smith at No. 6.
Mary Beth Gunn earned her third win against MSU as SEMO's head coach.
The Redhawks return to action at North Alabama on Feb. 17.
