Redhawks Travel to the Hoosier State to Take on Evansville Sunday
Southeast Missouri women's basketball (4-5) will ride last week's momentum into Sunday afternoon when they take on Missouri Valley Conference member Evansville (4-3) in Evansville, Ind. at1 p.m., CT. from the Meeks Family Fieldhouse.Â

Series History
The Redhawks and Purple Aces have faced off 10 times, making Sunday the 11th time both schools have played on the hardwood.Â

SEMO holds a 7-3 series lead with the last matchup coming on Nov. 10, 2019 which saw the Redhawks throttle Evansville by a final score of 83-60 in Cape Girardeau. SEMO's Tesia Thompson led the Redhawks in scoring that day with 21 points, while SEMO used a 27-point third quarter to pick up their second win of the season.

Evansville Purple Aces

Evansville (4-3) comes into Sunday's matchup with SEMO having lost to Bellarmine by a final score of 60-40 (12/8) after having just beaten fellow-OVC member Morehead State by 10, six days prior.Â

A'niah Griffin led the Purple Aces in scoring with 10 points. she also tallied three steals and two assists to fill her stat line. The Purple Aces were 1-9 from behind the arc and shot just 28-percent from the field (16-56) dropping their third game of the season.
Evansville is led in scoring by senior guard Abby Feit who has scored 95 points through seven games for UE (13.5 PPG). Feit also leads her team in rebounds, snagging 60 total boards on the season (8.5 RPG). Fifth-year A'niah Griffin is second on the team with 87 points (12.42 PPG).

Alicia Doyle dropped in a career-high 17 points and Southeast Missouri (4-5) used a big fourth quarter run to pull away from Western Illinois (2-6), 63-55, Wednesday (12/7) night at the Show Me Center.

SEMO trailed, 46-45, after three periods before going on a 16-2 run in the game's final 10 minutes. The Redhawks scored 14-straight points during their decisive surge.

Doyle quickly gave the Redhawks a one-point edge nine seconds into the fourth quarter. After WIU answered with a basket of its own, the Leathernecks would not lead again.

SEMO fell behind, 16-7, after the opening 10 minutes of the game but regrouped to outscore the Leathernecks, 22-14, and get within one (30-29) at the half.

A back-and-forth third quarter resulted in both teams scoring 16 points before the Redhawks erupted in the end.

Wednesday's game featured 12 lead changes and four ties. SEMO led for a little over 12 minutes, while WIU was ahead for 24:31.

Doyle, who scored 10 of her points in the second half, shot 5-of-9 from the field and made a near-perfect 6-of-7 free throws. Green contributed 11 points off the bench, while Smith pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

SEMO (20-of-24) outscored WIU (5-of-8), 20-5, at the free throw line. The Leathernecks scored 30 of their points from 3-point range where they shot 35.7 percent (10-of-28).

In the fourth quarter alone, the Redhawks made 5-of-9 field goals at a 55.6 percent clip.

Freshman Of The Week, Alecia Doyle
Freshman Guard
Alecia Doyle was selected for this week's Co-Freshman of the Week honors, the Ohio Valley Conference announced on Tuesday morning (12/13). Â
Â
Doyle, a Herrin, Illinois-native, scored a career best 17-points last Wednesday night against Western Illinois (12/7) en route to the Redhawks' fourth victory of the season.Â
Â
Doyle propelled the Redhawks to victory scoring four of her 17 points in the fourth quarter, including the period's first basket to give SEMO a one-point advantage.Â
Â
In her young career, Doyle is averaging 6.4 points per game along with nearly three rebounds a game and an assist per game as well.Â
Â
For Doyle, the Freshman of the Week was also given to Little Rock's Faith Lee.Â
Â
The league honor is the first in Doyle's career.

Team Makeup
The Redhawks return four starters from the 2021-22 season in senior guard
Kori Tomlin along with sophomores
Kennedi Watkins,
Halle Smith, and
Jaliyah Green.
Â
The trio of Watkins, Smith, and Green combined for five OVC Freshman of the Week honors last season.

Other returners from the 2021-22 squad include redshirt junior

Julia Sion,
Michaela Mayfield, and

Sion will make her Redhawks debut after transferring to SEMO midseason (Jan. 2022) from North Alabama.

The Redhawks also added five newcomers including three transfers in
Tamia Stallings from Alabama State,
Rahmena Henderson from Kilgore College, and
Kiyley Flowers from Grand Canyon.

The roster also features a pair of freshmen in
Tykara Harrison and
Alecia Doyle.

Looking Ahead
Following Sunday's game versus Evansville, SEMO will play host to Missouri Valley Conference member the Illinois-Chicago Flames. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m., CT. at the Show-Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.Â
