Redhawks Split Doubleheader with Eastern Kentucky

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri (22-17, 14-9) split a doubleheader with Eastern Kentucky (16-28, 10-16) Friday at Capaha Field. The Redhawks won game one, 6-2, before dropping the nightcap, 8-0.

Starters Dylan Dodd and Darren Williams hooked up in a strong pitcher's duel.

SEMO gave Dodd a quick lead when it scored twice in the bottom of the first inning.

Jevon Mason and Danny Wright both singled to give the Redhawks runners at first and third with one out. An infield hit by Andrew Keck and EKU error led to both Mason and Wright scoring to give the Redhawks a 2-0 cushion.

Dodd went on to retire 15 of 16 hitters between the second and sixth innings.

While Dodd was having his way with EKU's lineup, Williams was just as effective. He no-hit SEMO for six-straight innings after giving up three hits in the first. Williams also retired 16 in a row before giving way to Jacob Abbott

After EKU managed to get a run in the top of the eighth, the Redhawks jumped on Abbott to blow the game open in their half of the inning.

Connor Basler led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mason. After Tyler Wilber was intentionally walked, Wright smacked a base hit to right and Basler scored. With two on and two outs following a fielder's choice, Wade Stauss slammed a three-run home run over the right center wall to extend SEMO's lead to 6-1. For Stauss, the home run marked his team-high 10th of the season.

The Colonels threatened in the top of the ninth and did get another run, but Austin Williams pitched out of the jam and struck out Kendal Ewell to end the game. Williams picked up his third save.

Dodd, who ran his record to 6-1, tossed seven shutout innings and allowed only three hits. He also struck out eight and walked only one.

Williams (2-7) took the loss. He scattered three hits and gave up two runs in seven innings. Williams finished with six strikeouts, as well.

Both teams had six hits.

Wright went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI to lead the way for SEMO. Mason, Keck, Stauss and Basler each added a hit. Additionally, Wilber's hitting streak ended at 15 games.

EKU used a six-run seventh inning to key its 8-0 shutout in the nightcap. The Colonels no-hit the Redhawks for three innings before building their lead in the seventh.
EKU became the first team to shutout SEMO this season.

Louis Davenport III (3-3) earned the win in relief. Davenport struck out six in three innings. Bryce Travis and Garret Simpson were also involved in the shutout.

Blake Cisneros (3-2) suffered the loss. Cisneros allowed two runs on one hit and walked one.

Bryce Grossius gave the Redhawks six strong innings. Grossius did not allow a run and struck out six on 77 pitches.

The Redhawks had just four hits in game two. Wilber, Keck, Lincoln Andrews and Danny Sperling each had a hit.

SEMO and EKU wrap up their series at 1 p.m., CT Saturday.
