BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Kaitlyn Shea, the 2021 Ohio Valley Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Year, ran in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Saturday in the final day of the 2021 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships West Preliminary held at E.B. Cushing Stadium.
Shea, the 2021 OVC 3,000-meter steeplechase Gold medalist and Southeast Missouri track & field record holder, completed the event in 10:51.30 Saturday in the opening of three heats for 44th overall.
The senior from Jefferson City, Missouri, led the first heat after the opening lap, clocking in at 39.51.
Charlotte Prouse of New Mexico won the first race in 9:44.99 and was second overall. Brigham Young's Courtney Wayment posted the fastest time of the Preliminary, crossing the finish line in 9:42.02 in the middle heat.
The top three finishers from each heat plus the next three best times (12) advanced to the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 9-12 in Eugene, Oregon.
Shea was one of six Redhawks to compete at the 2021 NCAA Division I West Preliminary this week.
Dylan Clark, the 2021 OVC Hammer Champion, finished 23rd overall in the hammer field event with a toss of 202-2 (61.63m) Wednesday.
Josiah Kilgore notched a javelin distance of 177-4 (54.05m, 45th) in his first throw Wednesday. The 2021 OVC Javelin Bronze Medalist competed in the second of three flights at the Preliminary.
In the long jump,
Donald Hatfield Jackson registered a feat of 24-9.75 (7.56m) for 21st overall in the event Wednesday at the Preliminary.
Terrico Garrett was clocked at 1:52.31 (39th) in the first round of the 800 meters Wednesday evening.
In the second day of the Preliminary on Thursday,
Carli Knott finished 10th in the opening of four heats. The senior from Jackson, Missouri, crossed the finish in 4:31.54 for 38th overall at the Preliminary.
Hatfield Jackson competed in his second event of the Preliminary Friday. The Arnold, Missouri native, cleared a high jump height of 6-7 (2.01m) on his first attempt for 40th overall at the Preliminary.
All six student-athletes made their NCAA Preliminary debuts this week in College Station, Texas.
