IOWA CITY, Iowa – Romana Tarajova advanced to the Quarterfinals in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I Women's Central Regional Championship with a pair of wins on Friday and Saturday at the Hawkeye Tennis Recreation Complex.
Tarajova, a senior from Dolný Kubín, Slovakia, has now progressed the farthest out of any Southeast Missouri women's tennis player at the fall ITA Regional tournament.
Tarajova beat Nebraska's Isabel Adrover Gallego in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4, Saturday to advance to the Round of 32s. She then overcame Martina Zerulo of Oklahoma State, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, in the Round of 16s and will play in the quarterfinals Sunday.
Tarajova will face the winner of Thasaporn Naklo (Iowa State) and Maria Linares (Kansas State) Sunday.
Tarajova defeated Yada Vasupongchai of Central Arkansas 6-2, 6-2 in the first round Friday. Tarajova then matched up against Kelly Keller of Arkansas in the round of 64s, winning the match by a score of 6-3, 6-4. Keller is Arkansas' top singles player.
Ksenia Shikanova won her first-round matchup with Valentina Vasquez of Missouri by a final score of 6-0, 7-6. Shikanova then took on Sofia Smagina of Kansas in the second round, dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision.
On Friday morning,
Myroslava Zelenchuk matched up with Emelie Schwarte of Missouri. In a three-set match, Schwarte edged Zelenchuk 6-7, 7-6, 6-3.
DOUBLES
Romana Tarajova and
Ksenia Shikanova took on Missouri's Gabriela Martinez and Schwarte, losing 6-3.
Daniela Hlacikova and Zelenchuk battled with Florentine Dekkers and Ioana Gheorghita of Kansas State, but were outlasted 7-6.
