Redhawks Compete at Tennessee Collegiate Classic Friday; Host Illinois State Sunday in Double-Meet Weekend
Southeast Missouri women's gymnastics continues its 2021 season with a double-meet weekend Friday and Sunday. The Redhawks head to Lebanon, Tennessee, Friday for the second annual Tennessee Collegiate Classic against Northern Illinois and Lindenwood. First rotation for the tri meet is 7 p.m., CT at the Farm Bureau Exposition Center.
 
SEMO then returns to Cape Girardeau to host Illinois State in its home opener Sunday at 1 p.m., CT at Houck Field House. 
 
Season Opener Recap
SEMO finished third in its season-opening tri meet at Texas Woman's with Lindenwood on Jan. 16. The Redhawks totaled 190.700 at the meet. SEMO opened the competition with a 47.975 on beam in the first rotation and added a 47.725 on vault, a floor score of 47.550 and a bars mark of 47.450.
 
Kaziska Named MIC Gymnast of the Week
Junior Anna Kaziska was named the MIC Gymnast of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. The honor marks Kaziska's first this season and 10th MIC Weekly honor in her career.
 
Kaziska, the 2020 MIC Gymnast of the Year, captured a pair of event titles in SEMO's season opener on Jan. 16. She registered a 9.850 on beam and a 9.800 on floor to earn the pair of titles in the first and second SEMO rotations. She also added a 9.600 on vault. In her career as a Redhawk, Kaziska has accumulated 61 scores of 9.700 or higher and captured 28 individual event titles.
 
Our All-Arounder DSC
Sophomore Dahlia Solorzano-Caruso won the all-around competition at the Redhawks season opener on Jan. 16 with a total of 38.825. In her 12th career meet as an All-Arounder, Solorzano-Caruso, compiled a 9.775 on vault for second overall at the meet, a pair of 9.750s on bars (third) and beam (fourth) and a 9.550 floor score. 
 
Jolie, Jolie, Jolie, Jolie
Sophomore bars specialist Jolie Miller led the Redhawks on the event at the season opener with a 9.800 for second overall at Texas Woman's tri meet on Jan. 16. The mark was Miller's fifth career score of 9.700 or higher on the event and second career score of 9.800 or higher. 
 
SEMO Debuts
Ashley Albrecht and Anna Speller both made their Redhawk debuts in SEMO's season opener on Jan. 16 in Denton, Texas. Albrecht, a redshirt junior transfer from Illinois-Chicago, missed the 2020 season due to injury. She posted a 9.600 on floor to accompany a pair of 9.300s on vault and bars this past Saturday at TWU in her debut. Speller, a freshman from St. Louis, Missouri, registered a 9.475 on beam in the opening rotation. 
 
Last time at the Tennessee Collegiate Classic...
SEMO posted its second-highest team score in school history on Feb. 28, 2020, to overcome Northern Illinois, 195.800-194.775, in the first installment of the Tennessee Collegiate Classic held at the Wilson County Expo Center. SEMO also posted 2020 season highs on vault (49.075), bars (49.050) and beam (48.775). The vault mark ranks first in SEMO program history and surpassed the record set against Seattle Pacific in 1995 (2/18). The bars score is the third highest in the Redhawks record books and the beam score tied for 11th overall in the record books.
 
Jolie Miller won her first career individual event title with a career-best 9.875 on bars. Dahlia Solorzano-Caruso captured the all-around title with a personal-best score of 39.350. The mark tied head coach Ashley Lawson (Godwin, 2/21/04) for fifth all-time in SEMO history. Solorzano-Caruso tallied a pair of personal-best 9.850s on vault and bars before concluding the meet with 9.825s on beam and floor (PR). Anna Kaziska was second in the all-around competition with 39.100.
 
Looking Ahead
After SEMO's home opener on Sunday, the Redhawks stay home for their third week of the 2021 gymnastics season. SEMO welcomes Texas Woman's to Cape Girardeau for a home dual on Friday, Jan. 29 at Houck Field House. The opening rotation will start at 6:30 p.m., CT.
