Redhawks to Face Missouri in Doubleheader Monday in Columbia

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis (2-3) will compete in a doubleheader against in-state rival Missouri (6-2) Monday at the Mizzou Tennis Complex in Columbia, Missouri. Matches are scheduled for 10 a.m., CT and 2 p.m.
 
The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved to Monday because of sickness on the Southeast team.
 
The Redhawks most recently split their weekend trip to Memphis, Tennessee, with a 4-3 victory over Lipscomb and a 7-0 loss at Memphis.
 
Kseniya Zonova and Vivian Lai both posted singles and doubles victories in the dual against Lipscomb last Saturday. Southeast jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the match with the doubles point followed by singles wins by Zonova and Lai.
 
Manuela Barriga gave the Redhawks their second win in 2020 with a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Eleanor Chapman at the sixth lineup spot.
 
This past Sunday, Memphis took the doubles point before completing the sweep with singles victories at the third, fourth, first, fifth, sixth and second lineup spots.
 
Zonova competed at no. 1 singles for the first time in 2020 Sunday. The senior from Kharkiv, Ukraine, knotted her match with Laura Bente at 1-1, with a 6-4 second set after dropping the first set 7-5. Bente then earned the win with a 6-1 third frame.
 
Maja Lundell and Grace Powderly both made their dual debuts in 2020 at the fifth and sixth slots. Lundell fell to Monique Woog, 6-1, 6-0, and Powderly dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Lina Hohnhold.
 
Romana Tarajova battled to a 7-5, 7-6 loss to Reayer at the second singles spot to conclude the match.
 
Missouri most recently split its doubleheader on Sunday against Old Dominion and Bradley. The Tigers fell to Old Dominion, 0-4, and overcame Bradley, 4-0. 
 
Mizzou bounced back in a big way in the afternoon match, as the Tigers posted wins in the No. 1 and 3 positions in doubles play to clinch the doubles point over Bradley. No. 58-ranked Serena Nash and Gabrielle Goldin defeated Sandra Maletin and Natalia Barbery, 6-0, while Lisa Fukutoku and Elys Ventura beat Victoria Sánchez Bronzetti and Nina Marjanovic, 6-1.
 
Mizzou earned wins at the No. 2, 3 and 4 positions in singles play to clinch its sixth win of the season, as Ellie Wright, Vivien Ábrahám and Fukutoku earned wins. Wright won in three sets over Bozana Lojpur, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, while Ábrahám won in straight sets over Natalia Barbery, 6-4, 7-5 and Fukuotku won 6-3, 6-3 over Sánchez Bronzetti.
 
In the 2019 matchup with Missouri, Isabella Krupa and Teona Velkoska improved to 2-0 with a 6-2 win over Marta Oliveira and Ábrahám to start the dual meet.
 
Krupa also fought tough against #60-ranked Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) player Lisa Fukutoku at no. 3 singles. Krupa won the opening set, 7-6, before Fukutoku evened the match at 1-1 with a 6-1 second set. In the third set, Krupa was leading 3-0 before the match was stopped. 
 
Southeast next travels to Peoria, Illinois, for a weekend tilt at Bradley on Saturday, Feb. 28 and then a meeting with Western Illinois on Sunday, Feb. 29.
